Some of my pals have this habit... they'll often qualify their scores by saying how many blobs were included (as if that's a good thing)

This seems quite common on here too

But why?

To my way of thinking the fact there's blobs is bad not good :(

I suppose it's another way of saying they played well for a lot of the holes and if not for those mistakes they'd have done well

But to my way of thinking it probably means the medal (proper golf 🎣) scores would be worse (maybe considerably so), had kind old Mr Stableford not let them off the hook ;)

Is it just me?

Maybe this should be in the minor irritations thread but I'll just leave it here for discussion...⛳

It helps people believe that their score is better than what the actual score is

For example someone saying 36 points and 2 blobs would think their round would be better than 36 and no blobs

Maybe they’re just pointing out that they scored well but also had 2 or 3 bad holes.
I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

I don't think the game types are comparable.

I always want to play to my best, but will generally be inclined to take more risks in stableford than a medal. So it's not really a case of being saved by the game type as i'd be less likely to take the hero shot on in a medal.

36 points is 36 points, but if i got it in 14 holes and not 18 i'd take encouragement knowing that i'd played some good golf (holes) during the round. Granted i'd also have played some worse, but as a handicap golfer i'm always gonna play bad shots, but the good ones are what keep me coming back.

It shows you've got a higher skill ceiling than someone who battles for 30 points a round with no blobs every week. Carries more weight when someone with a lower handicap is saying it though I think.

Speaking personally, a blob in Stableford is an unforgivable sin & likely to be a result of bad thinking / poor course management. Mentioning it is an indication of how much better my round could have been if I'd played sensibly.

This.

For some reason people say it to make it sound like theyre better they are. I've probably done it loads!

I posted in the buffer thread today I had 35 pts with 4 x 1 pointers and a blob.

I’m disappointed with that score, it’s not to make me appear better than I am, I’m off 12 because my qualifying scores reflect how I play.

If it had been a stroke comp I’d of posted gross 83 for a nett 71 and that it included 4 double bogeys and a triple.

It’s simply putting a “bit more meat” on the post, it would quite boring if the threads were people post scores it was simply a thread with just numbers

Think most will have done it. No different to those saying I had net 77 in the medal and if it wasn't for the 8....

To be honest it doesn't bother me. People will always talk about their round and it's always a game of fine margins.

Last spring when I had a round of my life, which still is 7 shots better than any other comp score I have ever done, scoring 46 points. I handed my card in to the pro shop, receiving a comment of 46 points with a blob!! I never mentioned it, but obviously it matters to others. I did actually tap in my misdemeanour by the way, so the total stroke score stands.

Nice shooting

My best ever (by some margin) was 45 points and before anyone asks...

... that was without any blobs 😆
