My club runs a winter league, the course is modified (mats & frost greens when needed) and shortened plus we only play 12 holes - thus 200 odd members can play on Saturday- though you can mark from Sunday to sat.

We are split into teams and the columinative best 10 scores count each week. For individuals you get your best 9 out of 10 cards counted and prises for winners plus section winners. Stableford scoring - probably due to lost balls with leaves etc, with CSS worked out we get winter handicaps and they can get cut worked out as 18/12.

It only costs £25 to play the league (plus £1 each week for the 2's)

I am just back from my 3rd round (25,28,29 points so far) I got cut one shot last week and it looks like another cut of 2 shots this week.

Alongside this there is another competition that you can mark in simultaneously - known simply as the turkeys - You pay £10 and it runs over 10 weeks (till Christmas) - you can nominate any day to play - EVERY week there is a turkey, ham and meat voucher for 1,2 & 3rd in each category - you may win one of each maximum.

I must admit I am really enjoying playing these formats. I don’t really care for winning much from the league I see it as good fun competition - however I really love playing the Turkey - sad I know but I would really love to sit down to Christmas and bore everyone to death as everyone is at ours this year.

Do any other clubs do something similar?

Pretty much every club in NI does the turkey shoots fella, the winter league in our club starts the week the turkeys end though this year we are doing shopping vouchers instead of turkeys for a change. I dont see myself entering the winter league as the wife and I are expecting our third little un and its due in january.
I also like the format but dont like the expectation on you to play every week rain, shine or even more rain, last year my fourball missed two weeks because it was pretty grim and some maniacs who did go out had the cheek to make a comment that it was nice that we made it to the finals night, he nearly got cut down in front of his elderly chums.
We also have a huge society within our club for those that play 18 holes on a sunday called the Polar Bears, good craic.
