My club has just gone onto the full winter course last week, very short and and now has 7 par 3's ( 3 of the best short par 4's get shortened by 200 yard and made into par 3s) instead of the usual 4.

One of the par 5's becomes a tricky par 4 rather than a fairly easy par hole.

All full greens though and putted well thanks to the new Graden Machine we got this year. Slits and injects kiln dried sand, far less invasive than hollow tine and recover and sare still good to put on straight after.

First week of the winter league, course is now a par 67 shot a 69 gross with a double on a par 4 so played OK-ish!

What changes do you have a to your course and how is it playing at the moment?

No changes apart from no white tees, so course plays about 5900ish.

Course is in excellent nick and playing very well.

I do wonder why the par 3s don't go on mats immediately though. Two of them go down to 130yds and under, so everyone is hitting irons and so taking divots. I've suggested putting in a permanent winter tee on many occasions but to no avail.

oh dear...... That wouldnt be a course where I would play sounds like a pitch a putt. Its such a shame to reduce and change the course layout so drastically in order to try and protect it. I understand some courses cant cope with the rigours of a British winter due to their layout or soil, foundation etc but courses are normally more resilient than lazy green keepers give them credit for and the traffic numbers are significantly reduced in winter. Yes be careful about traffic and trolleys etc but come on we play a fortune in membership fees nowadays, clubs need to be a little more flexible and less pedantic about winter layouts and rules.
My track will never go on to temporary greens or use mats etc as there is just no need to.Members wouldnt put up with it. We are strict on trolley movement around the greens and tees and yes the course plays off the Yellow tees which are the same as Summer and of course winter rules with pick and place etc. Green keepers have to do some work of course but when the Spring comes the greens are always the best in the area and the course looks a gem. Personally I would never join a club that changes all this or I would only pay 6 months membership and go some where else in winter.

Exactly the same as the summer and playing really well. We still have a decent amount of run on the fairways and the greens are firm and putting well. Winter hasn't really hit here yet but I'm sure it won't be long before it does, I suspect it will be just in time to cancel our next qualifier in 2 weeks

Only preferred lies at the moment, but on 23rd Dec we go onto fairway mats until the end of Feb. The one qualifying comp per month is played off normal whites and no mats. Never seen a winter green in use but we do have a few winter tees that shorten the holes by 10 or 20 yards at most. I have no idea if it is strictly necessary but the course is usually fantastically presented thoughout the rest of the year so I trust then greenskeepers know what they are about. The membership seems content that the measures taken are proportionate and we reap the benefits in the spring and summer.

One member even commented that he liked it as you always gets consistent lie on a mat!

Yesterday our "winter course" comprised of....

Tee mats... That is all. Full length, big greens and superb conditions.
Only thing that told you it was winter was preferred lies.

Hey Banana Man and also a Good Morning to you Patrick, are you both we'll?

It's the full length course at Leven Links ... The preferred lies are worth it but other than that it's all systems go. I was suffering with a cold etc on Saturday and I would've swore that it was measuring 10,000 yards!

Pretty much the same here, winter tee-boxes some of which are shorter than the red-tees. All fairways have protected zones where you either have to play from a multi-mat, or move the ball to a drop-zone and play from a multi-mat. The course is pretty moist as it's beside a bit lake so I can understand the mats. Thou the council golf course around the corner, it's pretty flat is very playable and has none of these protective measures.

Just down the road from you we are the same. Trying to get as many Winter League 4BBB and Winter League Mixed Greensomes matches in before mid Jan and the snow arrives.

I'm surprised your course does that being a links, should be playable all year round? I also play on a links and we don't even have winter rules never mind forward tees.

Whites are in the normal place and can be used by all members if they want too.

Yellows are moved around a little. Some have gone to the front 10 yards and 1 or 2 of the tee box some are moved over to a different position. Cant say it makes the course any easier as you still have to avoid all the evil bunkers and you still have to hit the fairway off the tee.

The course probably plays around 200 yards shorter but its not easier I can assure you.

We play off yellow tees in the winter. Makes a change as we play off whites the rest of the time. Not a lot of difference though about 200 yards. Preferred lies, no mats, and we rarely have temporary greens.

Good news is the half way hut has finally re-opened, and it serves the same food as the clubhouse. The best sausage bap going, and you can eat it inside now to get a warm up. We can also ring through our order from the 9th tee. If only I had a mobile phone.

Partly lazy greenkeepering, partly conditions some of the membership. We have a fair few over 60 members and a lot of them like the shorter course over the winter, its a good 1000-1500 yards shorter and they feel more competitive due to that. In the Fun comp we have between Christmas and new year we had more turn out for that than the Club championship:(

Even Royal Dornoch Run a short course over winter and if there is any frost the championship course closes.

Not too bad dear boy, golf is on and off.

No changes whatsoever. Full length course circa 6900 yards, full greens putting well and fairways still with a bit of roll. The course plays better in the winter than the summer, so it's a joy to play at this time of the year (apart from the cold temperatures!!)

No change for us either. Full course. Naturally we have pick n place but thats normal. If the course gets too bad they might open a temp green, but it does have to get really bad for that.
