Hi All,

I've a few days off between Xmas and New Year and looking for a course recommendation for winter, within 2 hours of Sheffield. Anywhere that holds up particularly well in winter conditions and isn’t off fairway mats ideally.

Would be nice to play a top 100 course, but, open to any suggestions, conscious it is likely to be a Saturday and Sunday which limits a lot of the Liverpool / Southport diamonds unfortunately!

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks :)

Selby has a reputation for being the driest in Yorkshire. Alternatively Alwoodley, Leeds is highly rated and usually dry. Both about an hour away.

I played Alwoodley and Moortown in May and they were great, not sure what they would be like in Decemeber-March, it would seem they are too far inland.

I’ve noticed they do a decent 2 course deal, but, heard Moortown can be wet in winter so may try in late March when the green fees more reasonable, but, better chance of good conditions

Very tempted to play, although as a 18-24 handicap, thought it may be too difficult?
I'm off 18 and have been lucky enough to play it twice. I loved it both times, don't be put off. Play it off the correct tees, yellow for me, and you will be fine.

There are a crazy number of bunkers but you just accept you will go in some and get on with it. The greens are the hardest bit, massive, fast, breaks all over. Easy to 3 putt but again, just accept that happens and enjoy.

It's a cracking course, I wouldn't worry about playing it off 18-24 👍

Thanks Lord T - this is very reassuring. Will give them a call tee time wise albeit fear may be struggling on a weekend, which is the same at Woodhall Spa (unless last minute, somewhat disappointingly!)

Ganton is fabulous.
Intimidating of the tee because there’s bunkers everywhere, but there’s more room than you think.

It was once under the sea and totally on sand ( according to members)
They have created massive wastelands on the course and it’s visually stunning.
We did the greens there and always play it after.
There’s a very nice dormy house there if you want to stay.

Highly recommended!
