Winning a Knock out comp without playing a single game

I would personally withdraw and leave the trophy not won this year, theres no satisfaction in winning without actually playing a single match.

Nah, i would take the trophy and would be all over twitter and here with pictures of me spraying champagne everywhere, drinking from the trophy, going to bed with it. All without saying a word about how it was won. Only chance i will ever have of winning one, so i would bask in the glory of being club knockout champ! ;)

After you got pelters at presentation evening as no doubt everyone would be aware of how you won it. ;)

No...

Its a pain arranging any sort of e tie at the club, I'm not going to bother playing next year myself. lots put their names down then are never actually avail to play.
I dont play in them for the same reason . to hard to organise most of time .. We had no matchplay comps this yr , scratch or handicap because of things like this ,
people didnt adhere to dates, over 50% didnt even pay because they didnt insist on payment upfront, so when they got knocked out they didnt bother , the 2014 scratch final was played March this yr ( mainly due to all 4 semi finalists being on a team that did really well in 2014 & were involved in that right up to Oct ) IMO they still should have had to stick to comp rules tho .

We always have to pay for entry and it pays for the winnings but I have not had any difficulty arranging singles ever. We only had a bit of trouble with our pairs semi final as it was at the end of August/start of September. All four of us had holidays booked that overlapped.

I did know of one person who emigrated without telling anyone. He was dq'ed when he could not be contacted after the round closure date, so not much of a problem but it took a long time for us to work out what had happened !

As someone that has won a club knockout this year, I'm glad that I won it without any walkovers as I think it would have lessened my achievement.

In the pairs knockout, my partner & I received a w/o due to one of our opponents being injured, but promptly did the decent thing and lost our tie in the next round!

We do charge an entry fee for all knockouts at our club and as far as I know very few ties end in w/o's, although I'm aware that some of the more particular members have claimed ties rather than seek an extension where their opponent has been unavailable to play by the deadline.

Did one of ye injure your oppo on purpose or something ? I don't understand the highlighted bit otherwise ..

No, didn't injure him on purpose, I was meaning doing the decent thing by losing after having had a walkover...

Sorry did you lose on purpose because you had a walkover in your previous tie ?!

Sorry mate shoulda stuck a smiley face in there .. I wouldn't say there was any expectation on u to lose on purpose , it was not ur fault that you won that way ..

Totally up to ye tho & if that what u wanted to do , not anyone elses place to tell u otherwise

Part of the problem - always make it clear when matches are played by and that there are no extensions right from entry then everyone knows where they stand.

Personally I see this approach as creating the problem!

The minute you take any personal assessment of the situation out of the core equation (who goes through) you open up the situation to manipulation.

The whole idea of such events at club level is to meet people and play golf; manipulating your availability around a fixed set of rules in order to progress to the next round becomes common place in the absence of appropriate flexibility and the existence of judgement calls on who goes through (based on 10+ years committee work at 2 completely different clubs).

Common situations such as players away for 2 weeks each over a 4 week slot but able to both play the first available date into the next round, should be played not coin tossed. (Note there should always be 5 weekends available in my opinion as well - start earlier and finish later, or limit entry otherwise).

The only reason for finals not to be played are death or leaving the club.
