Why medals are not a good idea for club competitions!

I notice at our club that there is a reluctance amongst higher handicappers (20+) to enter the medals we do run, so maybe there is some self selection to the benefit of the low handicappers? Stablefords are much more popular.

Stablefords are not popular because they are faster they are popular because they
allow you to mess up holes but still be in with a chance of winning.
Players who get lots of blobs hate medals because they lose the feeling of finishing
a round.
That's why I never give gimme putts because it gets you used to finishing the hole.

1) 2) My FC normally has a pretty good short game. A week before when the greens were softer, his 3rd, 4th and 7th shots would have probably stopped close to the hole instead of running into trouble.

I'm normally pretty good at driving, but recently because of where they've put the trees I keep hitting it into them!

If Stablefords are faster, which they generally are, surely that is a bonus point!

You could argue that only those of a certain standard, who don't take too many shots, and don't lose many balls, should be allowed to play competitions.
But that isn't really fare on the lower standard of player. Just as it isn't fare to stop those who prefer medals (like me) just because some duffer took a 13 last time out!

Competitions are about playing good golf, to your handicap level. Not about playing fast golf!

I prefer Medal however I never go near the course when the seniors or ladies are
out playing.
Of course there are good players amongst them but around my course they shoot
in the 100s and for a short course that's going to be slow.

Unless you have a load of blobs I can't see why a stableford should be much quicker. Perhaps because it is a stableford golfers take on more risky shots, and get into more trouble than they would in a medal ?

My medal score over the last two years have been a lot better than my stableford ones. I think I play more conservatively in medals, and keep the ball in play more.:mmm:

I think you'll find we pick on anyone who posts utter tosh on a regular basis!

I've been here quite a while now so am well aware of what goes on, and the regular bullying of Del is very distasteful IMO, but am sure all those who partake are very proud of themselves.

So does that mean you agree with every post you don't reply to?

Or is it just an excuse to continue to pick on one particular poster on the forum?

It certainly means I don't disagree (or object) to the content sufficiently to warrant a reply!

And it's actually not a case of 'picking on'! Though the occasional/frequent daftness of some of the ideas does need countering! This entire thread is a classic example!

He gets roundly criticised for trundling out things that seem to happen in every game he plays that support his arguments for changes in the game that most posters vehemently disagree with.

It seems that, you don't mind him keep on and on doing this but do mind when we write our disagreement to his views - to be fair it's hardly bullying!

Of course they don't need countering, unless of course you're so self important that you've appointed yourself as the arbiter of what's allowed and what's not, or maybe you just get a kick out of bullying someone else to try and look clever.

Who knows why, but no matter the reason it says more about the people doing the bullying than it does about Del and his harmless musings.

Or just maybe it's a complete difference of opinion that any forum member has as much right to comment on as Del has to start his thread. If you think this is bullying I guess you don't even want to go there on the politics or football threads!

Most of the replies to Del are of the ilk "why are you posting this again" i.e. it's not a difference of opinion, but rather objecting to him posting his opinion. And when a gang of folk gather on a thread and start belittling him then yes, it's bullying.

If it's bullying then I would expect the people to be rightly punished

So far it's people rightly critisicing someone who constantly posts the same messages towards changing the game of golf to make it easier because he struggles to play the game. He could even be knowingly posting the same repeatative posts knowing he gets a reaction - that could be counted as trolling the forum. But bullying because he is being critiszed ? Surely to be bullying there needs to be insults ? Threats or even threatening behaviour ? And the mods acting on those - if you believe any post is bullying then report the post instead of throwing accusations at people.
