At our par-4 2nd hole in a Seniors Medal this morning, one of my FC's pushed his second shot to the right of the green, behind a bunker. His pitch was a little strong and ran into the semi-rough on the other side. He then hit a reasonable looking chip shot back onto the green, but it just kept rolling (our greens are pretty hard and fast at the moment) and eventually trundled into the right hand bunker. A duff and thin shot that ended up on the nearby 9th green followed. A free drop off the green and another reasonable looking pitch shot that landed just short of the green, but still ran right across the green into the right hand bunker again. 2 more duffs and a slightly thin shot onto the fringe, a chip and 2 putts added up to a 13. This saga took about 15 minutes. In a Stableford he could have picked up after 6 shots! :mmm:

He could have picked up and NRd on that hole

Once your playing partners have faffed about wasting time looking for their t shots, second shots, 3rd shots etc I didn't have time to go back and replay my second, which was a perfectly hit 9i to the back of the green, which we never found. My partners both completed the hole, but the group behind had been waiting for ages, ditto for the groups on the tee.

Not sure if I'm missing the point but isn't the whole idea of a medal to hole out and record a score. We've all had cricket score holes in these events but surely the bigger issue here is why you didn't just call the group behind through as this was unfolding and kept play moving. I wouldn't have NR'd the hole (hate NR'ing at the best of times let alone at the start of a round).

With you not quite getting the issue. Sure he may have taken a while but that's golf isn't.

Believe one of the Pro's had a 14 in a previous major - shall that get scrapped because of a bad hole ?

People can still get HC cuts after a NR so the player had the option

..and as for the subject - curious - as medals are the core and essential to all club competitions as they establish players handicaps without which all handicap comps become meaningless.

Not sure that the OP meant exactly how the subject came out.

We could hardly call the following group through, as he never actually lost his ball. If he had, we probably would have done so! :)

But even in a medal, you cannot score worse than a nett double bogey for handicapping purposes!

I once wrote a 19 on a pp's scorecard after the second hole,
asked if he wanted to NR, he said ' no thanks i can get it back'

Suprisingly he didn't :D

which is true...but the point of playing in a stroke play comp is to hole out in every hole. B esides the shots you play can affect how you play the rest of a round so picking up after your 8th shot say, would change your mindset than had you continued for another 5 shots. And mindset is part of the challenge of golf.
