Why medals are not a good idea for club competitions!

Not sure if I'm missing the point but isn't the whole idea of a medal to hole out and record a score. We've all had cricket score holes in these events but surely the bigger issue here is why you didn't just call the group behind through as this was unfolding and kept play moving. I wouldn't have NR'd the hole (hate NR'ing at the best of times let alone at the start of a round).

Smiffy lies awake at night just dreaming of scoring a 13 on a hole.

So Del, are you advocating all club comps to be Stableford? So a 25 handicapper can completely mare up a couple of holes but still win the top prize where a low single figure player would be stuffed

So what was the consequence?

Your group probably got out of position or maybe lost a hole - and you could easily have either made that up or invited the next group through. Little or nothing actually lost - and the gesture may have been really appreciated!

As others have posted, there was nothing to stop the FC from picking up and NR-ing from the comp (though probably after 8-10 shots), playing the rest of the round simply for handicap - which is a Stableford measure (Clause 19 - Stableford Adjustment) anyway!

The title of the thread doesn't actually match with reality. Perhaps a better one would have been 'Why Medal Competitions Take Longer Than Stableford Ones'! But we (should) all know that anyway - as triple and quad bogies are still likely to be played out! As it is, it's simply tosh!

I made buffer in the 1st medal of the season 2 weeks back after getting a 9 at the 1st. Would have still made buffer had I picked up and NR'd the hole.

I personally much prefer playing Stablefords because they are generally quicker. We did catch up with the group ahead by the 4th hole, so my FC's 13 didn't unduly delay play. He soldiered on to score 110-17=93 nett, which wasn't the worst score in the comp! :mmm:

2 questions:

Do they not water the greens at your track once they start getting overly dry?

Have you suggested your FC has some short game lessons?

M
We could hardly call the following group through, as he never actually lost his ball. If he had, we probably would have done so! :)

You don't have to have lost a ball to call a group through

If you are holding them up you can call them through regardless

I believe you have told extensively before that you prefer stablefords.

Basically it allows you a bad hole yet can still win the comp

This has confused me, how did that work?

The vagaries of stableford adjustment....

Nobody in the comp buffered so CSS went to SSS + 3

My score was SSS + 5 but I got -3 for stableford adjustment on that hole which took my score to SSS + 2, 1 under CSS.

However, if I'd actually scored a 5, I would have been SSS + 2 without adjustment so CSS would have gone to that and no cut for me!
