I can understand why beginners end up buying from these shops as there are very few reviews and articles giving advice on beginners kit. I know now that the ideal option would be to build up a set of quality clubs bit by bit but many beginners do not think like that, I know I did not. I wanted a bag with everything in it that I needed and did not want to pay a fortune for it. The trouble is that you never see articles or reviews of these sets. with a bit more information available in magazines and such like, beginners may steer away from these Dunlop sets etc and look to the better low cost makes. I was lucky to a certain extent and ended up with a set of Hippo OSIVs which did me nicley when I first started out but I but with the level of knowledge that I had, I could easily have ended up with a set of Dunlops etc.

Maybe if magazines etc reviewed these beginners sets more people would start out with better kit in their bags.

When I started out i saw a review in T****'s Golfer for beginners sets, I started with an MD Surefire complete set for £179 roughly. It was a great set which could be updated club by club, and had a great review in the mag.

They've now gone to a friend who is starting out...

M.D, Hippo, Ram all seem to make great starter sets of high quality. Lots of my friends play with these sets and get on very well.

BG I bought the same Hippo set with bag, towel the lot in for £84 on EBay, I found they to be decent for a beginner and not too bad a make, thought the bag strap did break after 5 months. I bought them in August last year and upgraded the driver at xmas for a F speed and the putter (thank you GM) to a Yes! Tiffany and the irons in Feb to MX19s with a bargin WG706 52 for £37  . The Hippo gear did the job and I would happily lend to a mates if they where interested in starting to play.

I passed my Hippo set on to a mate who still uses them. There are good beginner sets around but there is not much info or advertising.
