Our start in this game should incorporate both the kit and an understanding of the game and how it should be played.

Any sport should be. However how many of us actually started playing that way?

I do agree with you as in my business, taking part in the sport could cost you your life, and yet you don't have to have any training, any advice, just money.

I have seen so many beginneers badley advised or have ignored all advise as sales patter, and have consequently have had to be rescued by the coastguard / RNLI. Sadley some have even lost their lives.

Golf is a 'soft' sport to learn from your mistakes by comparison.

Sailing, in all it's forms, (well it used to be), racing mainly, inshore and offshore, and delivery trips across the pond and to and from the Med. Used to work professionally as an instructor and on a super yacht in the Med.

Also used to do a bit of gliding (another expensive hobby). Wouldn't dream about going flying without an instructor as a beginner.

Every days golf is a pleasure.

Err actually the reverse is the truth.
Every day we relied on each other to see the day out.

I quit the day I got scared, not for me.for them.

Never had friends so close, never trusted the same before or since.

Point taken.

I also used to ride horses which is part of how i met my partner.

Stopped that cos I never fell off a golf club.

I think it adds to our game that we can laugh at a ball sailing into the trees, cos all I have lost is £3.00.

Guard my clubs like a she Lion tho!!

Just to add to this post, my golf started with about £120+ worth of gear from these shops, I still use the trolley i bought for a tenner, its lasted me nearly two years and still work fine. I also still use my dunlop waterproofs that i bought for about £30. Whilst i sweat like anything in them I simply dont have £100+ at the moment to buy a decent pair.

I think for beginners these sort of shops are quiet handy, as long as you dont believe that you are actually saving 70%.

I agree Minty. There is just no where on the high street that sells golf gear, its been totally taken over by AG and the likes that are usually based on the outside of towns and cities. I would have thought in major cities that a retailer would make enough cash to stay afloat with some city centre shops, when shopping with the wife I would die to test out some drivers and putters or pick up some tee's and the likes in the middle of the usual saturday afternoon shopping trip with HID.

Just quickly on a rather comic note regarding JJB, I went past one of their stores last week and they were advertising for a full time post of a 'golf expert' and it said as a subnote that a qualified professional was preferred. Why would a professional want to work at JJB? Granted they may have no other place to get a job, but if I was a trained pro I would take working in JJB as an insult.

I know what you mean Parmo it'd be heaven wouldn't it!

You go round 17 shops looking at clothes then go back to the first one we went in while I go look at some sexy new drivers!

I would be like dream land, somewhere on a lunch break you could wonder to and try the latest toy. I may email AG asking why they do not consider it, it might have something to do with rental costs in city centres but with the amount of golfers about I would have thought if someone in the office picked up the latest driver or whatever then the Jones affect would happen.

JJB aren't exactly paying much either for these 'Pros'.

As for high street golf shops. yes I like the idea of it as intimated above, but I haven't been into Southampton for months now, and I wouldn't want to go into town to do my golf shopping. AG is bolted onto the driving range down here and is incredidably conveinient (too much so according to HID). It has plenty of free parking, no traffic jams, and no chavs hanging around. Also high street rents are huge compared to these more remote locations, I'd be surprised if anyone could actually make a profit from a town centre golf shop.

Hapless,

I agree that this AG at Hedge End is very good, Great service and a good range, pop in ask to borrow some new gear, they tape it up and you can test it on the range and then go back to the launch monitor indoors. Worth the trip up from Salibury! and open til 10pm! My evenings are complete! If only i could use the putting green as a non-member of the range... :(
