WHS - is it an advantage to higher handicaps

Playing Handicaps of the top five in each group were,
High: 26, 24, 19, 23, 20.
Low: 12, 10, 18, 6, 10.
Lowest gross score was 2-under by a +2 handicapper.
26 hcap winner has a playing handicap of 24 now. He had 2 pars and 2 birdies 2s on SI 17 and 18. That was in his first 11 holes. He did the last 7 holes in 11 over par. He had an exceptional 2 holes on the 6th and 11th which makes it an exceptional one-off round then I suppose. Well done him - is all I can say about it. I don't begrudge him his win in any way.

I am a scratch golfer, and giving lots of strokes has never bothered me in the slightest. High handicappers get the strokes because they need them, and more often than not, they need plenty more than they are getting.
This is the correct attitude! To me, a high-capper is likely to feel the 'weight' of your likely relentless run of Pars (or even a Birdie or 2) and 'crack'! I believe the big 'danger' in (Singles) Handicap Matchplay is the 'improving' player - often in the range 11-15. This is because their handicap/HI still very probably lags a little (possibly 1-3 shots) behind their current ability.
