When you should take a drop or any other shot than the one I made!

On Tuesday evening in an after work round of 18 holes I made a very costly mistake. On the 9th tee which is a 154yd par 3, I scuffed my tee shot which hooked my ball out to the left over a small hump backed foot bridge.

The footbridge is a hump backed bridge with a 2 ft decorative wall and my ball landed 2ft or thereabouts from the wall.

The ball had landed on a bare patch of mud and my shot to the green was a 40 yd 60 degree wedge. Although the lie of the ball wasn't good, I was confident that I'd be able to get the ball over the wall without too much of a problem ;)

I was wrong :o it's not often I hit two bad shots in a row however with a four ball on the 9th watching and my playing partners wondering how close I would get to the pin, I duffed my shot, hit the ball off the top lip of the wall which fired the ball straight back at me, hitting me on the inside of my thigh with a resounding thwack before deflecting into my right testicle

Everybody who saw the shot cringed and it was very nice of the four ball waiting on the tee to ask if I was ok with genuine concern, although it was difficult to see if the were grimacing or smirking :smirk:

I struggled around the next nine holes with my mind elsewhere however three days later with a nasty bruise on my inner thigh, I am still very sore and would strongly recommend that anybody else faced with a similar scenario should do the sensible thing and either hit or move the ball to a position which does not pose any risk to themselves.

Wrong thread, shouldn't this be in the embarrassing golfing moments thread......:)

I can sympathise though, whilst not golf related, about 25 years ago, I used to play baseball. Didn't used to wear a box when training..... one day was at the plate batting, the ball was pitched in, swung.....hit....across the top, the ball went straight down circa 70 MPH, hit the plate and and came straight back upwards hitting me in the crunchers.........:o

I dropped to the floor like a sack of spuds, the pain was excruciating, everyone ran over, standing around me in a circle as I writhed in pain on the floor......The point I remember most was one of the young lads glancing over and saying in a surprised voice ....."he's crying".....

I remember that happening in a British league game I played in years back too. Who did you play for? MK had a team called the Truckers if I recall.
