I wonder if every club is the same , the greens hit their peak , members love them , then the maintenance happens and members then moan like made about the greens being ripped up - it’s like a yearyl cycle

Thats what happen with us, Saturday truly horrendous. Back Sunday morning and they where already rolling alot better. Hoping they water them twice a day and hopefully Saturday will be nice again with the temps we're having

Ours have been nice, they are a smidge long at the moment so running slow, but with the forecast being hot and dry for the next 7 - 10 days i'd rather that than cutting them short and risking them getting burnt up

Garbage. We’re two weeks post maintenance and it is abundantly clear that, yet again, not enough sand has been applied to the greens, many of which still have gaping holes. We were promised the greens would be back to their best within three weeks of them being worked on. Fat chance.

Sand cost an absolute fortune now and clubs are cutting back.

But if you’re going to core them you need to fill the holes or the grass won’t grow over an empty hole.
It’s a problem a few comittiees don’t understand when it comes to finance.

Or might be just poor maintenance?

It’s the same every year.

A nearby club has greens about half the size of ours, which are predominantly huge, and yet they consistently use twice the amount of sand we do during maintenance week. Their greens are generally back to a good standard after 2/3 weeks. We seem to wait 6 weeks or more. It’s so frustrating, but we pay the price for being at a proprietary club.

Everything has.
Some clubs are only doing the greens once a year now.

But to get proper growth you must fill the holes or the roots can’t grow over an empty void.

Post maintenance - almost brilliant but will be in a couple of days.

I think golf courses will now be going into recovery mode.
Quite a few courses around here have almost no grass cover at all on their fairways so there is little or nothing to grow back when this weeks rain arrives. We have some courses using mats on tees as they are unplayable.

Grass is a strong plant and it does come back but when it has worn away to absolutely nothing it is difficult to restore - time to invest in seed companies.

Fairways still holding up in most areas and some micro tining and seeding has been done in many areas

Best thing the club did was invest in a fairway irrigation system - and to think we spent 3 hours persuading members that the investment was worth it

Just need to build a reservoir next

Yes, we have fairway irrigation - quite a rarity in this neck of the woods. It has been a god send in the past 10 years or so - it hardly got used at all in the previous 20.

We installed it the year before Covid after the drought in 2019 where we needed to go on mats during the winter because of the mud ( burnt baked fairways with no grass )

it’s expensive but much needed now

Some of the fairways I’ve seen appear to be even worse than 2018, but only time will tell.
The investment is probably sensible on a few levels - we have had a large increase in our waiting list, particularly from local clubs where there are side sloping fairways which have not been much fun for a lengthy time now and have had quite a few periods, albeit shorter, like this over the past 8 or 9 years.

Our course is built on sandstone and is like a desert atm.

It the worn out patches havnt really recovered fully from last years weather.
It never gets wet but it dries out after a week of sun.
It’s playing very tough with sloping fairways that are impossible to hold atm.

Greens are fantastic though.

Perfect, as good as they’ve been in my recollection. Senior Club Champs tomorrow; Club Champs Sat and Sun…and then next week they’ll prob be given Autumn timing/dressing. Course in superb condition tee to green.

Which club are you a member of…I was a member of Filton from 84-96 and have played all the Bristol and immediate area courses. Filton back when I joined especially, was very much considered a workaday track - a poor cousin if you like, even though we members could see what could become of it given the significant work being carried out to develop it - and by the time I left it was maturing very nicely. I played it about ten years ago and it was in lovely condition.

Played Hallamshire yesterday, great course . The greens were superb arguably the best I’ve ever played on .
