I went there yesterday afternoon with the wife and a mate. Living only about a mile away, but never playing the place I was looking forward to it. Just for everyone, the car park was perfect! The Pro was excellent and a quick wander into the bar area to search for my mate saw us greeted with an A4 piece coloured bue paper with our names on it (along with others), in the foyer on a stand, who were due there as guests that day. Proper smart! The course has been an Open qualifier in the past and is rated in the top 100 of courses in England. A check on the HC's and we all got a hefty rise off yellows. The course was bone dry so we got massive amounts of run, andas I'm driving the ball well I was over a few humps off the tee and although it seemed unlikely to happen, I lost balls this way, which was a bit frustrating. Hitting through a par five in two was annoying as well. I'm just bragging!!!!! The greens were perfect, although very slow. This was due to the fact the greenkeepers have just done work on them and are reluctant to cut them too low until they are confident they are properly healed, fair enough. This caused us putting problems as we all thought they looked as though they would be fast. But apparently, before the work was done, they were like lightening. There are alot of dog legs left and right, and loads of humps and DEEP hollows that you have to clear on the way round. If you can't hit a decent ball you are going to struggle. It's a great challenge. Looking down the fairways to pick a spot to hit to to ensure a safe chip on to a green or to avoid a big bounce away from your intended target, like mine on the first, lesson learnt. Make sure you hit the greens otherwise nasty bounces will ensue. Some daunting tee shots to encounter. Brilliant par three's. You can see the green from the tee (except the 16th) and well guarded. It's a tough walk round as well. Up hill and down dale all the way round!. A quick mention for three separate young lads (13/14 ?) we let though. All three were great players and soooooooooo polite. An absolute pleasure to chat to as they went though. This, for me, showed me what the course was about. Proper values, proper manners and a great understanding of how to look after a course.
Yes I'd join in a heart beat, if I had the money, but would they let me in?
