What were your first set of irons

I went down the beginner set route and started out with a set of Hippo OSIV. Came with 5-SW plus driver, 3 wood, hybrid and putter all in a 'lovely' green bag. Did me fine for a while then I gave them to a mate who still uses them.

These.

Not actually my very first, I used some 1970s Slazengers for the first few games. Then bought some of these Mizunos....

RGDave, I would have been very jealous of you at the time - I can remember reeeeaaaly wanting a set of these but I could only afford the Astrons.

Gear4Golf starter set, was reduced from about £120 to £65 and came with Driver, 3 Wood, 4 wood, 4 - pw, sand wedge, putter and carry bag in hideous orange!

Saw mw through the first 5 months of playing and once the bug really bit I replaced the lot :D

Petron something or other starter set, cost about £80 (if you pay peanuts . . .)
lasted about 7 weeks when the head flew off the 7-iron - no it wasn't the shaft, the hosel had broken.

Straight back to the shop 'we don't sell those anymore!' but also 'have a full price voucher'

I had a ladies Patty Berg 6iron to start with.

I had a Patty Berg sand wedge to go with my junior clubs.
They were a Ben Sayers half set. Bought all the way back in the '80s

Howson Circuit Plus Irons and some old spray painted woods.

Still have them in the garage, as im sure nobody will ever want them :D

A blade putter, a 9,7,5 and 3 iron pinseeker blade irons. £3 each at Hemswell market and a bag of potatoes to hack around with.

I also got a Black Knight 5 wood with the tiniest head I have ever seen. I could hardly hit it but it was great when I did. I stuck to the 3 iron mainly for long shots as it was more reliable.

That started me off hating woods for a really long time, didnt help that the head flew off my 1st ever 3 wood after owning it for a year or so.

Spooky. I wanted some Astrons and ended up with these.
They were fairly rare, I believe, mostly sold in the US, unless I was sold a pup.

Set of MP Classics, bought from the Pro at Hainault GC in Essex with my first summer's work savings.

Some B****D stole them from my car in Reading in 1993 and i still miss them, an in particular the thin blade 2 iron and a lovely Ben Sayers putter in there as well.

I presume they were just a copy of something McGregor-like

I've got a few of the wilson berg clubs too as well as a couple of the wilson sneads which must have come out around the same time as they are very similar clubs. I only bought them a couple of years ago just to have a practice and see if I was going to take to golf. I havn't bought any new clubs yet but the first proper set I got was last year, some old titleist dci's which is what i'm using now. Only started playing this year, just friendlies about once a month so i'm probably going to get a second hand set of ping i10,s or i5's maybe even i3's before I buy a brand new set a few years down the line.

Then one I'd grown to adult height (aged 11 or 12) my uncle was kind enough to donate these bad boys:

And so began my love affair with Lynx.

They were a good set of irons in their day.
I remember the Mizuno Dominoes too. A set that I hankered after but couldn't afford.
Some of the best irons I ever had were Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scots. Lovely clubs. I can't remember what I done with the bloody things now but they were gorgeous.

My first clubs were a half set of Slazenger Johhny Miller that I saved up two weeks salary to buy for £60 from Argos circa 1983. Came with a 3 wood, 5,7,9,w and putter in the biggest bag ever.

They were a good set of clubs though. I replaced them a couple of years later with a set of "custom fitted" STIX (Ping Eye copies) when I got my divorce money through. The STIX were bloody useless, when they got nicked from my car ('91 ish), I went back for a second set of Slazenger clubs with the insurance money. I bought a set of XTC clubs with graphite shafts which I only replaced about 3 years ago. I still have them in the garage, and still use the pitching wedge for practice in the back garden.

Yes they were. I remember the first time I hit one, I hit the 5 iron so sweetly, I can remember it vividly.

I only upgraded to the Black Cats because they looked awesome and had just gone on sale when we were on holiday in Florida.

Wilson X31
they lasted one season because they were damaged on a return flight from Ireland. I replaced them by Titleist DCI gold covered by credit card insurance

Wilson sam snead and I got them one at a time in 1986 from the shop i was working in :)

Started with a mixed bag; some Slazenger AccuPower, Slazenger California and a Seve 6 iron. Think i still have them in the attic.

My first matched set was the Wilson FG-49 blades 1, 3-SW when i was 22.

A set of second hand Swilken Cavity Sole Irons. I got them when I was 12 or 13 after saving up my money from caddying. I only parted company with them in 2005 as they were truely worn and torn...
