Bumped into a couple of guys yesterday, who haven't played a single handicap qualifying comp this year and will be inactive next year. Both play regularly but are not interested in comps according to them?

I find this quite strange, i like a bit of competition and a goal to chase.

I got sick of playing once a week and for h/c every time. I wasnt practicing enough so struggled (as much mental aswell as physical).

I quit being a member for that reason but have now realised I miss it! 1st stableford of the year for me this sunday so practice daily and can't wait.

I do enjoy social golf alot though so will be balancing it out for next season.

Love playing in comps, but July and August become one or two comps a week and if i'm honest it got too much and kind of took the fun away a little.

Now back to two a month and actually looking forward to the next one again

Golf for me is about 4 hours with my mates....I really have no interest in playing comps and only do just enough to keep my handicap active.

I played in non this year until a few weeks ago. My situation was a little unique in that my best mate was in the country for 2 years only before moving back to Australia to have children and I wanted to play with him every week as we wont have this time again ever. That said I do not tend to play many and have not in the past either.

I play golf for golf, I love to hit the ball and have fun. My impression, not helped by this forum is that golf as a sport can tend to draw in the idiots of the world, those looking to be elite, resist, sexist and so on. I tend not to need a handicap figure to know how I am playing and do I need to put myself under pressure and perhaps not have a good time in order to put a number to my skill level. I really do not want to get up early at the weekends, I hate getting up, even to do the thing I love, I wish comps were later in the day!!

In the last month or 5 weeks I have played the medal, a team comp and a pairs comp and found the direct opposite of what I have written above. Lovely down to earth people who share the same frailties as the rest of the world. I loved the medal and made buffer with an awesome come back from two truly terrible holes. It made me feel very proud of myself and I am a little hooked on that feeling. Getting up early was not the end of the world.

I shall stay active and am pretty sure I can get down to single figures. I hope my current attitude stays as it is and I continue to meet good people.

However if Tom lived in the UK I dont think I would bother and would just play with him.

Work, normally.
Being a 5dayer, our Comps are on wednesdays.
I try to keep Wednesday morning GS free but can't always.
So if work clashes with the comp...no comp.
And, to be fair, I'm not hugely interested by comps these days.
Its far more fun having the "friendly" battles against Dragged and CVG..

Nothing - I just wish we had more qualifiers. I can't play midweek comps so i'm limited to weekend only, so I only do 2 per month , sometimes 3 when its one of the two 36 hole board prizes .

Not a lot! Usually only family commitments and have only missed a couple of the Saturday comps. I can't get up in mid week due to work now but always enter at the weekend. It's golf for me wether it be a comp or not really, I try not to get to serious about, I'd go mad otherwise. Oh hang on too late! 😃

I play in a lot of comps purely because I love competing, however sometimes I wont enter
just to take any pressure off and have a good laugh and extreme banter,we have a fourball
on Wednesday that becomes a Tourettes day out.
I also enter comps because you never know as an amateur when the really good round is going
to come and the possibility of a cut.
I am like Gibbo looking to do some more opens and a bit of travelling next year to play
with forum members and do some forum meets.

Several things really:

1. Time mainly; work on weekdays and often prefer doing family stuff at the weekend.
2. Our competitive season is also relatively short running from April to September and I play most of these. This does mean I can rarely be bothered to sign up for a medal in the depths of winter - it's more banter, practice and exercise then.
3. Stopped playing many county events as the pace of play is killer. Good luck to them but I've lots to squeeze into a weekend and watching herberts take 176 practice swings for a shot (before and after) is a little fustrating.
4. Sometimes, like this last weekend, I just don't fancy it. Golf isn't the be all and end all and I still get to play around 35 rounds a year with a majority of those qualifiers. That's just fine for the moment.

I do change the emphasis of competitive rounds and this year have played more knockout's than previous years. Enjoyed that too. Might try a few more club matches next year and take the opportunity to get out a bit more.

I can see both sides of this. I play in as many comps as I can and if there is a comp on at the weekend then I want to be in it. My brother and my playing partners, however, were all about better ball matchplay between themselves. It was all bets between themselves, banter and personal rivalry. Whilst most of them do enough to keep an active handicap, they tend to 'negotiate' between themselves who gets what shots before each round. I can see both sides of it and am happy with either.

When I first joined my club I was nervous about playing comps. I know it sounds silly, but with the rules section on here it can be intimidating seeing all these if buts and maybes, so playing a proper comp does make me a little nervous. Or at least it did.

Now I can't get enough, I think I play better in comps, I like the pressure, the focus and the challenge. Met some nice guys too in the comps, which is a bonus!

The stress and tension of having a card in my hand impacts too greatly. I play enough to keep my handicap active and that's it. If I ever get past this issue then I would play more but that has not happened so far. I have far more fun playing with friends, club away days etc. For some reason I don't care about the card on those days.

I do also think that competitions can be a little intimidating, rules played to the absolute letter, players concentrating hard on their own cards/handicaps etc so can be a little serious. Social golf is more relaxing and so fun for me. If I never had to play another strokeplay event again I would be very happy. Stableford all the way.

Format being either Bogey or Foursomes tend to be the main ones I swerve, play in almost all the others if I dont have other plans. Early tee times the night after a poker tournament the day/night before the other times I tend to miss comps lately

Try and play in as many as possible

But certainly understand the changing trend in some clubs towards some golfers that just want to Play with their mates and enjoy themselves without havin any worries or pressure

I play in all the comps I'm able to, but I do have a life outside of golf. I rarely play on a Saturday for example due to going somewhere with the Mrs or at the football.
Sundays are generally about 12 out of 18 each year, again through other commitments away from golf rather than choosing other golf events.
