...about your round when you look back at your play that day? It might be in the 19th or much later if you're a statto nerd. Was it how you drove the ball, your approach play, your scrambling, putting or even your bunker play (if you visited one too many ).

I've just had the most satisfying four rounds of golf in years! I didn't play brilliantly, don't get me wrong, but I was so pleased to be able to see the ball going (mostly) where it was supposed to, despite not being able to complete a full backswing. (I think it might be my back issues have led me to adapt to a more controlled swing.)

So, my choice as to what makes me happy - Striking irons well  (in the right direction :o:D).

I've fallen back in love with the game! :whoo::whoo::whoo:

For me, if the ball striking is good, esp with the medium irons / hybrids, then the rest tends to fall into place.

This is also heightened to almost perfect if the course is quiet and I can take an extra 20 / 30 mins on the round to really enjoy it.

A handicap cut of any size made me most happy. Never won much as 16 handicappers win everything (so many of 'em and one always plays like a 5 hcap for a net 59!). Ball striking etc not so bothered about, it's 'how many' not 'how' for me as a good scrambling day and 'getting away with it' can be satisfying too.

Playing a par or two during a round is good for me (I have two shots on almost every hole, so a par is a nett eagle ... nett eagles are nice). Also, hitting long and straight drives always lifts my mood, even if I mess up later on that hole. There is just something exciting and empowering in smashing that ball out there. Long holed putts are great as well. A good putt to finish a bad hole can totally change my momentum.

I always write down a "shot of the round" after I get home, so the one shot that stays in my memory as something special. When I look through that list, it is about even between drives, approach shots, long transport shots with my woods or hybrids and good chips and putts. So I guess: any good shot can make me happy.

On really desperate days I can find consolation in things like: "I found more balls than I lost" or "I saw a hare on the 18th fairway" :mmm:

Just when nothing was memorably bad. I strive for mediocrity.

Leslie Nielsen once stated that his aim "was to play bad golf better". Maybe slightly out on the wording but those were the sentiments. I can also relate to that.

For me, I am happy with clean ball striking. I can have a 6 on a par 4 but if I hit pure shots to get me on the green then I can still smile. Different for different levels of golfer. One aspiration would be a disaster for another.

Driving and putting is generally quite stable, so for me it's all about irons and quality of strike.

If I get this right I hit lots more GIR, and invariably shoot my better scores.

I should think so too, considering the shedload of money you took off us at the weekend.

Haha yep. Literally all it takes is me walking away thinking "driving wasn't too bad... putting was surprisingly decent... irons were ok too... no disasters actually!" and I'm happy.

Getting under handicap really. Even if I haven't been playing well if I come off under handicap i fell really happy because I must have scrapped hard

Can I help it if the only thing you bettered me in was mediocrity!

In a comp it would have been 2 rounds in buffer and 2 worth 0.1s - not something to shout about usually but I'm still over the moon! :whoo:

Sinking long putts, and a handicap cut.

Hitting a fairway doesn't really give me that much of a buzz as I have a target that's 40 yds wide. Nailing a green from 150yds is ok but from that distance I'm usually flag hunting. However, watching a ball track towards the hole from 30 feet, and dropping in usually gets a little fist pump.

What makes me happy is no rows in the lounge or on the tee before we go out, a good laugh with my fellow players, nobody throwing a tantrum on the course and no rows in the lounge after the round.

Plus a round played at good pace (somewhere around 3 hours).
