What other sports have handicaps?

The closer you play on average to your ability the less chance you have of winning its true handicaps reward the guy who can either be ten above or ten below

squash, badminton, tennis, table tennis, snooker, archery, ten pin bowling, bowls, (and I'm sure many more) have handicapping based on the performance of the individual.

yachting handicaps based on the equipment, unless it's one design racing, so that different classes can compete together

motor sport such as touring cars have regulations to create a theoretical one design series with weight handicaps to try and negate anyone who develops a better car within the regulations!

All handicaps do is reward the inconsistent the more consistent you are the less chance you have of winning anything

And by average I meant gross score net scores are pointless

Handicaps allow everyone to play together on a level playing field - if there were no Handicaps then golf would suffer

Does it level the playing field or push the advantage towards 12 handicappers to win the majority of our club comps last year I would have had to have been near the course record

It levels the playing field - you all start on the same - i have managed to win a few times - as has a scratch player and mid HC players and High HC at our place

Our place is different to most by the sounds of things as when the comp is a medal I would put good money on it being own net by someone with a single figure handicap. The course is firm, the greens fast and the rough deadly...

Stable ford however it's nearly always 12 + handicap wins, there are odd exceptions. The last one was won by a 4 capper who shot 42 points...

But medal at my club is defo a low handicappers game...

As usual you are talking rubbish

How am i talking rubbish when talking about the people who have won the comps at my club - you can confirm that on HDID if you so wish. But if all you can muster to counter the point is to "say im talking rubbish" then try and find some substance to your point instead of crying and whinying that higher HC than you win comps.

There is no point discussing something with you is like banging your head on a pebble dashed wall

whats the squash handicaps people have mentioned?

I played competitive squash for years and never came across any 'handicaps'

I never knew all these other sports had handicap systems, I knew about snooker but that's it, in saying that I have no interest in many of the other sports mentioned. I wish they had had them when I used to box, like letting me put a horseshoe in my glove or something!

I've also played badminton for many a year and never come across a handicap system. In fact I think it wouldn't really work as although one player would have a points advantage, the match would be a bit naff. Best player wins normally - I'd do the same for golf and scrap the handicap system. Want to win stuff? Practice more!

I've not come across this either. I would think within similar abilities it could fine tune the balance but would not work like golf hcp at all. I tried joining a small local club that had some good league players. As a beginner it was pointless - the ability gap was too large, I could have started with any points lead and would be run round the court like the proverbial blue ar*ed fly and still lose very time to these guys. Only hcp that would would would be to make them play in victorian diver boots (and helmet for some of them!), maybe then I'd have a chance in the first game of the set!

(feeling tired now just thinking back to this!)

Yes it was a bit naff. It was back in the day when there were lots of players playing in league matches. e.g. in Lothian there were 7 divisions for gents doubles. So mostly you knew which league team the player played in. This gave some rough guide to their ability.
If the discrepancy was too big just awarding points was not sufficient, and the handicap went ' 0-1 hand ' i.e. the stronger player also had to win back his serve twice before scoring points to his tally. (This was before they changed to the modern scoring system.)

As I mentioned these tournaments ( and they were always tournaments, I never heard of any leagues played like this ) were basically one a year and were a bit of fun. Now I think of it they often ran in parallel with a 'proper' tournament, maybe to reduced all the hanging around waiting to play that seemed to involve.
