Like it or not golf has a system where regardless of ability everyone has a chance to compete.
Where as most sports it's all about ability to win.

I can't think of any other sport that has a system like golf where a beginner could in theory beat Rory over 18 holes...

Horse racing does have some where they add weights, and some motor sports..

Any others?

Someone I played golf with recently plays snooker at club /league level and said they have handicapping which I hadn't heard of before

Our club has a snooker team and I couldn't believe that they had a handicapping system- what a great idea.

I love a game of snooker but I'm rubbish- I'd happily play under a handicap though.

I don't think any handicapping system could allow for me ripping the baize

I've played in handicap badminton tournaments, but they are pretty rare beasts - about as common as a Texas Scramble. Because of this the handicaps are a bit ad-hoc - done mainly for fun.

Archery has a well established handicapping system
A total beginner may have a starting handicap of 100 ,
my handicap is 17, which is pretty low, prob equivilent to about 5 ish in golfing terms :)

Handicapping is the most ridiculous idea ever invented why not just have the best winning like most other things

So every competition in every golf club in the world will be won by the same 5 or 6 people every time. What's the point in entering. Every yacht comp will be won by the same 2 or 3 boats each week at each club.

Obviously you'll need fitted for a cue , waistcoat , dickiebow and chalk, and of course lessons.

What is the point of competition if someone with an average score wins

Average score is par. Par never wins at my place but different people do. And yes it is down to the handicap system and people shooting below their handicap. If if was solely scratch then more often than not your so called average score would be the winning score at a club not pro comps

All handicaps do is reward the inconsistent the more consistent you are the less chance you have of winning anything

And by average I meant gross score net scores are pointless

Complete and utter tosh. Handicaps allow the majority to compete and yes on their day have a chance of winning
