What is your acceptable 'miss'?

200 yards get to up & down range

I dont find it acceptable to miss greens from 150 in ... im very often disappointed but i its still not acceptable

distance to the pin from them yardages , 3-4 yards or closer , chance of making it i what id be hoping for

Similar to Bill, I dont expect to miss any but when I do (regularly) I dont like being short sided with no room to land and let the ball run out.

Didn't Pelz calculate PER's (percentage error rates) from PGA tour players. For full shots I think tour players were between about 5% up to just over 9%.

So anything within 10% would be of a fairly high standard.

I think for part shots the PER's were worse.

Sit on , I was just about to say exactly the same, and was amazed at how good all the amateur golfers on here were compared to PGA Tour pros :). I think Pelz' data is eye opening, and because I know I am notas good as the pros, I will take a 10% distance either side of my target, and make sure that there are no bunkers, water , trees , bushes etc within that range, otherwise change my shot, which usually involves (at 200 yards) deliberately playing short where there is no trouble and an easy chip on. this works particularly well on new courses and helps take my club handicap away.

Me too, but it would be acceptable unlike missing the green altogether which would probably end up with me exclaiming "Terrible Show Stannard" (Replace "Terrible Show" with another phrase that can't be used on the forum)

You can tell how well Mike is playing every week by the number of Terrible Show Stannard's resonate around the course. Except the language can be a touch more industrial

From 200 yards I am happy to hit the green, the fringe or close to the green-say 20 yards.
From 150 yards I expect to hit the green each time as this is my favourite distance-might be middle green and not specifically at the flag.
From 100/18 yards I again hope to hit the green but leaving it within a decent chance of getting down in 1 putt....

Rather than a distance from a yardage I am to make my bad shots as good as possible, a little thin or a little faded is how I would like my bad shots to be. When that happens I know I am not far from a good swing and the result is usually not going to ruin my score.

200 yards - if there is water, im keeping it safe. most likely a lay up.

150 - happy to be on the dancefloor

100 and below im looking to get it close. on the dancefloor and makeable putt will do.

take it from there!

I tend to look more at what you are trying to achieve from the distance you have left.

With good conditions and no hazards in play.

From 200 yards I am hoping to get down in 3 more shots. 4 is acceptable. 5 is poor.
From 150 yards I am delighted with 2 more shots, 3 is very acceptable. More than that is poor.
From 100 yards 2 is pretty good, 3 is alright. More than that is poor.
From 80 yards and less 2 is good, 3 is a bit disappointing but acceptable. 4 and more is poor.

If you could stay within your "acceptable/alright" range you'd probably be single figures!

Your assuming I have only played one or two shots before I get to those distances

Haha true, I am. If you feel you can get up and down from 150 I'm guessing you can get to that point in 1?

Did you see that link I posted on the last page? I was amazed at the average distances pros get from 150 etc. Good reading for us mortals.

Being an optimist I found it inspiring. A pessimist would think "if they can't knock to less than 32 feet, what chance have I got ?"

from 80 yards its same again. 2 happy, 3 alright, 4 poor.

its when you miss the green by 10 yards or less. how many are you getting down in two? that's where scores are made!

In the process of rebuilding my short game starting with the Rule of 12. The immediate effect of that is you get it closer and give yourself more chances. Whilst I haven't quite cracked getting up and down from 10 yards off the green I am getting close enough where I know its 3 shots max and the odd up and down is creeping in.

200 - Anywhere on the green
150 - inside 25'
100/80 - inside 15'

Im not saying that's what I do, I end up disappointed quite often
