Hitting into a green that has no obsticles in play, clear day, good weather, what would you consider an exceptable mis, in yards, at the below yardages (.....Miss meaning missing your target area)?

200 yards

150yards

And the same with short game (Wedge shots). Same as above, no obsticles, clear day etc. With this what would you consider an exceptable distance from the pin as a miss?

100yards

80yards

What do you consider, for yourself, acceptable?

Just be curious to see your thoughts

200yds - Within 10 yds of the green
150yds - Within a couple of yards of the green
100 yds - anywhere on the green
80 yds - anywhere on the green

So for the 1st 2, leaving myself a chip is acceptable and the 2nd 2, leaving myself a putt is acceptable.

For me at 200 and 150, I'll take anywhere at all on the green! I'd be more than happy with the fringe to be honest from 200 too!

Again with the short distances, I lack confidence on my wedge shots so as long as I can get down in 2 from that shot I'm reasonably happy. Not very bold or adventurous but I know my limits.

The reality of my game is that i am more likely to knock it close from 150yds than i am from 80yds. My pitching is so bad its a joke.

From 200 id be happy with either short of the green or either side of it but the right length.

From 150 as long as it was on the green or had hit the green then either spun back or when over the green and laying in the fringe.

For 100 and 80 id be happy with anywhere on the green at least you still have a put at it.

Similar but I'd like to think I can hit the green regularly from 150 yards but a miss would be pin high left or right. From 100 yards I'll be looking for anything within 25 feet and 15-20 from 80 yards as I've been working hard on my distance control. Mind you as Mr Nicklaus said recently if you hit the centre of any green you'll never be too far away

200yds - within 40 yds of the green (weak distance for me as don't hit particularly long)
150yds - Within 20 yards of the green
100 yds - 80 yards - on the green within 2 putt distance

I'm far more confident with the shorter shots as these are the ones I've practiced the most. The 100 yards and in shot is my favourite distance.

200 yards - In and around the green leaving a simple ish shot onto the green
150 yards - Should hit the green more often than not or be very close
100 yards - Should hit the green almost every time. There will always be a few misses but they should be rare
80 yarsd - Should be putting from no further than 20ft most of the time

It really depends on the course your playing and where the danger is, but working on the assumption its my home course and where all the trouble is located

200yds - Pin high left or right by 10 yards
150yds - Anywhere on the green, preferably short of the pin to leave uphill putt or on and around the fringe
100 yds - Pin high left or right ideally but anywhere on the green would do
80 yds - As above for 100 yards

So at least with 1 & 2 i have a good chance of up and down, and with 3&4 I have a putt at it.

Same as Hawkeye with the exception of the last one. I'll be very disappointed to leave myself more than 20 feet away from 80 yards.

I'll take anything. I see every miss as a chance to make an up-and-down.

Never really disappointed where the ball ends up (unless it's really bad!),... only with my swing.

Me too, but it would be acceptable unlike missing the green altogether which would probably end up with me exclaiming "Terrible Show Stannard" (Replace "Terrible Show" with another phrase that can't be used on the forum)

200 Yards - It happens and it's acceptable ... A good example as to why I don't play golf for a living.
150 Yards - Not acceptable ... Brainless, I must try harder and more time at the range would help.
100 Yards - Shoot me.
80 Yards - lol ... That's just a stupid high handicap question.

Well I suppose if I was being pedantic about it (and why not, this is the internet after all ;) ), I'd say that any result is acceptable because you have no choice but to accept it!

I just took it to mean "What result would you not give yourself a hard time over?". I hit one from about 80 yds last night and left it about 20 feet away. It was a bad shot and I said "Terrible show Broon, you absolute flipping sillybilly" (or words to that effect) to myself, very loudly.

Didn't Pelz calculate PER's (percentage error rates) from PGA tour players. For full shots I think tour players were between about 5% up to just over 9%.

So anything within 10% would be of a fairly high standard.

I think for part shots the PER's were worse.

To be honest Gareth I do not accept missing a target under the circumstances you described at any of those distances. Obviously with the wedges I am expecting to give myself a birdie chance and at 150 to get a good birdie chance some of the time.

I do not find it acceptable to miss a green, but I do accept it will happen.

if i don't have a tap in birdie from all 4 scenarios i die a little on the inside and consider crying, then i blame my clubs. i must have been their fault no? ;)
