Is it the same as a private club? Is it any club that has members, vs a pay-as-you-play only course? I have literally no idea.

A private members club is where the members in theory own the club, rather than where the club is owned by an entity who controls everything.

The way I see it is a members club is owned and run by the members, whereas a proprietary club is owned by a company, like Crown Golf. This would also count for muni courses.

I play at a proprietary club, ie it is owned by a person or company. We have a nominal say in matters but ultimately, the owner does what they want.

A members club is owned and run by the members. You don't like something, you can actually do something about it.

…and members clubs make a surplus (hopefully) or deficit rather than a profit or loss.

To add to the above from LT (as I've always though of it:
A private club can be owned by the members or a consortium, but almost certainly has restrictions on when visitors can play, if ever.

Ditto - Some owners are better than others too!

So I think I understand that "members" and "private" describe different aspects of the club and are not mutually exclusive. One is about who owns it, and one is about who can play there.

It’s all about who owns it

You can have private members club where the members own the club but also dont allow guests

There are three models of ownership

Members- the members own and run the club lock stock and barrel

A proprietary club which is owned by a single or company - they will prob also have some members to help run things llle comps etc

Then you have council owned municipal clubs where the council own the course but rent the course for a club to play on it

The members club where I play means that I am part of owner of the club but with a £1 share (limited liability).

In practice this only means I will get a share of it's value if the club is sold.

We have a Captains Committee which is responsible for any thing golf related, an unpaid board of directors (all members) for things financial and we have employed staff.

As members we get reserved tee times some times of the day and all day Saturday, discount on food and drink prices.

Yes, the "something" could be asking for a motion to be voted on at the AGM.

for example

"This club will allow short socks of any colour to be worn on the golf course".
Personally I feel kindness towards my fellow members and would not wish to induce apoplexy with an indecent proposal however well meaning.

Members clubs are not always run by the members.

Some have positions like a secretary and perhaps a director of golf who run everything.

My course is a members club, we own the land and are run by a council elected at the AGM by the members. We do employ a steward who looks after the bar, we have a professional and employ greens staff, The catering is a 3rd party. Everything else is done by members

So who markets the club to visitors, takes bookings from visitors and agents? Who manages the greens staff, who looks after the buying or hiring of equipment? Who decides on and manages these budgets etc etc.?
