Morning all

When I play golf I absolutely hate having anything covering my lower arms....so will normally wear a polo shirt all year round, which is obviously a bit of an issue when its freezing cold.

I'm considering trying a "skins" type top out, as at least it will be tight on my forearms.

What does anyone else do? Does anyone else have similar issues?

And no, I don't want to see my pro about getting fitted for a top.

I am a new convert to a "skin" as I don't like tight fitting clothes. However they are a revelation and make life much easier on the golf course. Instead of lots of bulky layers I now have a skin, polo shirt and jumper. I will only wear another layer if the wind is really biting, I am in the North East, or if there is rain. Plenty of options but I have a basic one from Mountain Warehouse that cost me £5 in a sale and it works very well.

As you have an aversion to long sleeve items you could go skin, accept it there, polo shirt, sleveless top, 1/2 sleeve windproofer. Remove layers as you wish.

Keep your feet warm and everything will be right with the world!

I've got about 9 base layers, a couple of which are thermal and short sleeved (Mizuno), I prefer to have my forearms unclothed as well but I've not had a "problem" with wearing a long sleeved base layer.

I have 2 skins thermal under layers (different colours), bought in the next size up to keep my blood flowing, they have the little neck bit too. I really like them and you don't really notice they are on until the sun comes out.

You can just buy the sleeves on their own.

Its amazing how quickly your body gets used to being surrounded by a tight fitting compression top. First time I put it on I thought it was a straight jacket. Within a minute you body adjusts and you forget. you are wearing it.

I wear normal golf trousers under my waterproof trousers and on top if it's not raining I'll just have an underarmour / nike compression top under my usual polo shirt. If I get chilly because the wind picks up I just bung my GG waterproof jacket on. If it is really really cold I may don a beanie style hat, but they tend to irritate me so it's quite unusual.

Is this one of those threads from 2006 that get brought back up? The use of thermals/base layers is hardly revolutionary

I have a fantastic black polo neck top or a base layer.

Usually they go under a normal golf shirt with either a sleeveless jumper or short sleeve wind stopper on top.

In even colder conditions I have a lovely full sleeve wind stopper too.

For the bottom half I wear normal golf trousers, warm socks and nice warm overtrousers.

Round all those off with some Galvin Green winter playing gloves and I can tackle even the chilliest of dry breezy winter days.

If it is raining and cold then I don't play.

I do wind and cold, I do rain and mild, I do windy and rain and mild. I just don't have any gear for cold and rain! It has to mild enough to wear my very basic rain top and bottoms.

for the lower half i normally just wear my waterproof trousers without normal trousers underneath. Easier to move and the bottoms of my nice trousers don't get dirty.

Generally go with base layer/skins type top , under polo, under jumper. One thing i just cannot do is wear waterproof trousers over golf trousers. I just hate it hence i always wear waterproofs trousers with belt loops so i can just wear them as normal trousers and then get changed into "slacks" afterwards . I firmly believe that legs don't get cold enough to have to layer them up!!!

Generally the same as my summer wear, tshirt and trousers. If its frosty, I'll put a base layer on but know that I will be roasting in it after the first hole. Always short sleeves though.

i recently bought a short sleeve Under Armour cold gear top on Function 18. I wasn't too keen on the long sleeve ones. Was only £18 too.

Any of the big names do winter base layers: UA, GG, Puma, adidas, Mizuno etc

If you don't fancy compression type then go for a fitted fit instead.

Golfbase have some on offer just now

I've got UA for winter, and use SKINS for summer and got a thermal one for winter. But for ultimate compression try Pelham and Strutt. It's to aid posture and is the tightest base layer I've ever tried.
