What distances do you hit?

I would caveat this with just check your iron lofts.
I went back to my Mizuno MP52 s and lost 10yards, couple that with the greens now holding and I am seeing a 15yd deficit per iron number 🙁.
My wood has improved, I was not releasing and only getting 210-215 carry, now the release is happening the launch has improved as well apex has gained another 10-15yards in height and it’s carrying to 235-240 (winter - I was at the poor figures during the summer) I don’t carry a 3 wood, my 5 wood is pretty long, at 220-240 (summer) carry.

Surely this is all relative to the loft and shaft of your clubs? Some manufacturers have considerable differences in lofts for similar clubs from other manufacturers.
I've currently 4 sets of irons, all with completely different shafts and specs (lofts/nature of irons) and they carry remarkably similar distances!
Same with hybrids and fairway woods.

RE the OP

Just as expected my iron distances are well below what is expected but glad to see I can hit my lob wedge miles further than what is expected from a lady golfer. Why carry one when you only are expected to hit it that far?

So much of this depends on your age, build and fitness!

I just hope as I get older I still have enough scope to improve poor technique to make up for it!

I'm hitting the ball further than I ever did 30 years ago, yet I'm slower, fatter, older, tis a funny ole game.

280 driver/250 3 wood, is that carry ??

If so that's pretty impressive, yet your 7/8/9 aren't though all depends on loft I guess.

If you think his 7/8/9 are not impressive, I’m glad I haven’t posted :)

I should say, they aren't impressive in relation to Driver and 3 wood distance. If someone carries a ball 280 with the driver, 250 with a 3 wood is more impressive, then they have speed, speed that usually is still there when you get to 7/8/9. I don't carry it 280 with my driver but my 7/8/9 are slightly longer.

His irons are pretty much in line with my carry for those irons but his woods are a fair bit further so I'd guess he has more traditional lofted irons. I've got i500's, the 7 iron is 30.5, I'd guess his 7 iron is 33 or 34 degrees as he is likely at least a club longer than me.

What are the i500s like for feel on chip and run shots ? Do they feel disconnected or close to a forged club feeling?

Its funny my mate hits his irons crazy long but his driver and woods are not as long relatively speaking.

To be fair the averages on the irons are more or less the same as mine, just those three mentioned, my 7 is 34, mines are a touch longer but again, 250 carry with a 3 wood is serious stuff.

As already said, he may have strong lofted irons.

Good distances those. I’d find some of those gaps hard to manage though! Particularly through the wedges

The distances I use for carry/roll to work out what club to hit on a flat shot with no noticeable wind would be:

Driver - 210/230
3 wood - 190/210
3h- 180/190
4 iron - 170/175
5 iron - 160/165
6 iron - 150/155
7 iron - 140/145
8 iron - 130/135
9 iron - 120/125
PW - 110/115
52 - 95/100
56 - 75/80

These have been good enough to see me round in sub 90 all year off yellows.

I think when people say their average distance is 250, they actually mean their normal distance.
As for hitting woods longer and irons relatively shorter, I do that.
I know the target for the driver can be 30-40yds wide so I can open the shoulders a bit, whereas the target for the irons is much smaller so I will often ease off and hit an extra club. That also helps avoid the bunkers short of the green.

Loving the conversation, I understand loft on irons etc, but it is still good to get an understanding of what people are hitting. The funny thing with golf is one day I can be hitting 20yds less that the previous, even though nothing feels different. I do need to improve my swing. Currently I seem to have 2 swings .... the one where I feel I extend early, and the other which I am working on where I am trying to use body rotation, lag in the club etc ... however, at the moment, I can get 20 yds further with my over extension, and it still has similar dispersion to the rotation (although i do still get dodgy shots). Does the rotation technique just give me more places to improve?
