I did a little research recently and decided the best ball for me was a Nike PD soft. Everything I read about it was true. It feels great off of the club, and travels well without the need of fast club speed. They are not expensive either, and pearl grade balls can be purchased for about 50p each on ebay. After purchasing and using these for the last few months, I read somewhere the straightest golf ball in the world is a Bridgestone e6. It is advertised as reducing side spin drastically, travels well, and still feels relatively soft. I was in my pro shop this morning looking through the basket of balls and saw one. For the outlay of a £1 I decided to give one a test drive. Well, the nice people at Bridgestone certainly weren't lying. These balls are quite amazing, and I have never managed to spend so much time on the fairway in any one game. Needless to say, if you slice one or hook one badly it will go to the left or right respectfully, but believe me, the reduction in spin is quite amazing. There was also no noticeable difference in distance compared to the PD soft. After a few holes I got used to the fact the ball felt a little firmer than the Nike, and the feel of the ball on the green was excellent. I played 9 holes, and up until the 8th I was on for a record round. Unfortunately I completely cocked up on the 9th, but that was my own stupid fault.
For you low handicappers I am pretty sure this isn't the ball for you, but for us mere mortals I would strongly suggest you give this ball a whirl. I just ordered 20 pearl grade balls on ebay for £13.95 delivered, but has meant I have had to put 24 Nike PD soft balls up for sale.
