how?
Lets imagine you want to hit ball into a green that has a slope at the back that runs away into a lake. The pin is cut half way back on a flat area and we are 80 yards out, the ball is sat on a slightly fluffy fairway.
We can strike the ball using a pitching wedge with a half backswing and make a solid ball-turf contact sends the ball fairly low that lands on the green, takes a hop and spins up to a stop. This is using spin.
We can lob open the face of a wedge slightly and take a a long swing that hikes the ball high in the air so that it lands softly and stops up. This is using trajectory, very useful if there is a bunker or water between you and the green.
