what a disaster with the wedge

Lets imagine you want to hit ball into a green that has a slope at the back that runs away into a lake. The pin is cut half way back on a flat area and we are 80 yards out, the ball is sat on a slightly fluffy fairway.

We can strike the ball using a pitching wedge with a half backswing and make a solid ball-turf contact sends the ball fairly low that lands on the green, takes a hop and spins up to a stop. This is using spin.

We can lob open the face of a wedge slightly and take a a long swing that hikes the ball high in the air so that it lands softly and stops up. This is using trajectory, very useful if there is a bunker or water between you and the green.

Pity, nice course. Played moyola years ago when playing off 20 ish, would like another round there. Grace hill is a super track too just outside ballymena

played gracehill a couple of years go. class wee course with water on nearly every hole. i put one in the drink on the first by taking driver. its too much club. didnt get wet the rest of the day.

I saw 64* and just thought Why?

Why carry something so lofted and why try to belt it to its full yardage.

I do carry a 60* but that's only since moving to my current club as the layout and Hazards inc mounds around most greens can mean needing height and stop quickly as its easy to be short sided. The club gets a fair bit of use as well as I've managed to hone it for approaches at a couple of our shorter par 4s and perfect for our Par 5's where all the danger is around the greens. But I would never try to hit a full out approach with it or it's be straight up into my left eye!

Whenever I go to other courses though I don't tend to get any real use for it well not that I've found to the same extent at my club. Some say well if only use it at home club why use it at all, simple I play 90% of my golf there so well worth having in the bag.

Stuck in deep rough with a bunker 20 yards in front of me then the green. Full blooded swipe with 64 deg. I had to just to get through the grass!!!!! Out popped the ball 200 meters in to the air landing softly next to the pin. Tap in par. One guy that was playing in my group said that it was the best shot he'd ever seen. :D It's a trusty Wilson Harmonised wedge. Love it to bits but only comes out once everywhere had dried up and greens are lightening. Oh and ball is sitting up. So currently mothballed and has been for two years !!!!!

I have a 60* wedge, but only really use it for bunkers. Other than that I have a PW and a 52* which is fine.

I dont have any sand bunkers round my place either so I suppose it is a bit of a waste of club, but doesnt do any harm sitting in the bag. Maybe I'll swap it for a 56* one day and use that in the bunkers on away courses instead. Might even get the 56 out on my course on occassion but I find that the 52* is fine from any distance so not sure why I would need to change..
