Realisitically though, would Man City really sell Given to Arsenal or any other rival. if they do sell him it will be to a mid table team or abroad. May be wrong but didn't Chelsea do a similar thing with Cuddicini, rather have him warming their bench then stopping goals for a title contender.

No one said Pompey were a good team. :D

Put it this way,if I was an Arsenal fan and watched them play lovely football, reach the final of the CL and finished 2nd a few times in the league over a ten year trophy barren period and I got knocked over by a bus and had to go to the clubhouse in the sky,I wouldn't be happy going good in the knowledge that we won sweet FA but played 'nice' football and had a healthy bank balance.......I would much rather I went with the memory that we had lifted the odd cup or two! ;)

No but it just shows that winning the FA cup is meaningless anyone can win it only good teams win the league

I suppose its different in scotland as there are only two good teams you would expect to win something every year

Again,we aint discussing the SPL (Scottish Pub League) are we?

Back on the subject...surely a club with such a good infrastructure as mentioned should be making a better fist of the EPL then?

If you claim it is because you cannot compete financially then either spend a bit or get used to watching 'nice' football but winning hee haw.

"against all the odds"

can i have the number of your bookies...

All I'm saying is that spending power is the key in world football. Given that Arsenal haven't had the same spending power as Chelsea & United then it means they need to over acheive to finish ahead of those two. They almost did that last season. A good effort I'd say not a failure.

We were top of the league in March last year IMO that means we challenged but we ran out of players

Again as an Arsenal fan I am very happy with the work Wenger has done and is doing, I beleive Arsenal are the best run football club in the country and the best foot balling news I have had this summer is Wengers contract extension

If you guys want to worry please worry about your own teams Arsenal are doing fine

Surely as a fan seeing your team win trophies would be more satisfying than watching them play 'nice' football, finish 3rd-6th place, reach the semis of the CL and domestic cups and have a healthy bank balance?

Wenger has won plenty of trophies!!!

No trophy in the last 5 years so what? When was the last time Liverpool won the league? or Spurs? Villa? Everton? 5 years is not a long time and its not as if we havent been close, 15 mins away from winning the CL in 2006.

Trophies will come probably starting this year.

Arsenal clearly arent the best-run club though are they.

Massive debts that will restrict them for many, many years to come.

Whereas we consistently make a very tidy profit and have tiny debt levels which by the way, are less than our bricks & mortar assets local to the ground.

The debts are to do with the purchase and building of our new stadium, which we are way ahead of paying off, in fact we reduced the money owed by £120mil ahead of what we would have normally paid last season, and we still made a nice size profit.

Anyway Spurs are now managed by the liquidator so expect them to be in a court room sometime soon, fighting to keep the club afloat

But we are clearly not though are we?

We are owned by Enic, a private investment company headed up by the ridiculously rich "Uncle" Joe Lewis.

Neither do we face a battle to stay afloat. We cunningly bought as much freehold property as possible in the area, we are asset rich, our current assets are valued at some £20m more than the clubs debt.

Our current assets are valued at £62m and the last years net profit, after taxation, was £23.2m.

So to conclude, our finances are much better than the woolwich squatters, who incidentally, cant even fill their stadium whereas we have 29,000 people on the season-ticket waiting list and sell out every game, season after season.

Also, should Arsenal fail to make the top4, they are in very severe trouble as their whole financial pyramid is based on champions league level revenues.

Sorry mate but you are talking b*******, Arsenal's average attendance last season was 59,926 - hardly struggling to fill the stadium. And as for relying on CL revenues thats simply not true either. Arsenal will start turning a profit on Highbury Square this year to mention just one revenue stream outside football.

The Spuds still need to build a new stadium so lets wait and see how well they do with that on and off the field. :D

A profit from highbury square isnt the be all and end all though and doesnt make up for the rest.

Their finances are so tight that is why there isnt the money for transfer fees nor the wage structure to attract the top-names. If champions league qualification fails to happen they are deep in the brown stuff.

I cant wait til we build our new stadium, and it will have a cracking atmosphere unlike the morgue-like emirates.

Wenger never really spent any money before the new stadium either. Its just not his way. They have the cash but he prefers not to waste it, he probably gets a great deal of satisfaction picking up good players at a fraction of the cost and making them great players.

Some plastic Arsenal fans dont like this fact but they are thankfully the minority.

Back on the football theme though I do think that Wenger has failed to deliver. I understand the arguments about bringing players through, selling players (Henry etc) for profits, but at the end of the day its about winning. Liverpool fans have had Champions League and FA Cup success and I think that is a bigger achievement than anything Arsenal have done recently

Spurs have 'Arry in charge - be afraid, be very afraid!! He'll leave you £900,000,000 in debt..

As for Arsenal winning nothing - I have a hunch that winning the Premiership is fairly difficult. Every year Arsenal play delicious football and come very close - as a fan I'd be happy with that. They're challenging, what more can you ask for?? Sunderland spend a fortune every season - where do they finish up??

As for the CL - once again, very hard to win. Man U have been playing in it since 1993 (?) and they've won it twice. Chelsea have spent £300,000,000,000 on players and never won the thing - should their fans be up in arms at the failure?? No, they'll keep trying - just like Arsenal.

I'm a Palace fan - I'd love nothing more than the footballing stability that Arsene has brought to Arsenal. What's the alternative?? Rioch?? O'Neill?? No. Arsene's doing a great job there and the trophies will come.

Didn't Liverpool win the CL around the time that Italian football was being dragged through the gutter for throwing matches, etc??
