Given is available for a move as of today.

So Wenger sticks in a 2nd bid for 39y/o mark schwarzer.

Now Im not a fan of the goons, but I feel sorry for their fans.

Wenger has the chance to really improve the side with Given so WTF is he doing?

He is protecting his youth philosophy, which has failed with Flapianski, but may yet succeed with Chesney (you try and spell it properly).

He will never spend money on a player he thinks will hold back the development of one of his chosen.

If he really wanted a new keeper, he'd buy Akinfeev for about 8 mill.

Yep, it can be trying, being a fan of the Arse, but in general, we're going in the right direction.

The worrying thing is, we're 2 or 3 signings off a great team. But we have been for the last 2 years minimum.

Because Given will cost the earth in fee/wages. Wenger would not want to cause disharmony in the camp.

Similar story with Bellamy , great player but not worth the cost and aggro that comes with the baggage.

But with Gallas going to Spurs tomorrow there is a huge slice off the wage bill immediately. Given is one of the most consistent performers in the premiership and whether he stays at Fulham or goes Shwarzer only realistically has this season in him. Everyone can see the logical move excpet Arsene

Its not a matter of affordability its principle. Theres a point that Wenger wont go beyond and rightly so.

Arsenal has been transformed since Wenger came, new ground, training ground, record revenues, etc. The man is doing a sterling job and we're very lucky to have him. :)

I am not one to criticise Wenger, he has been awesome for the club, and key to it's current prosperity. However, if there really isn't the talent coming through, or it's a while off, buy for the medium term. Not Schwarzer, not Given, but somone proven, who has 4 or 5 years in them. Chesney is 20, so bung him out on loan for a few years.

Ditto for the defense. Wy buy 30 year old Squilacci. We can afford better. Heck, we only have 3 CBs. Buy another 26 year old for 10 mill. No one famous, just solid.

I'm not expecting champagne signings, just some sensible buys to fill a gap anyone can see.

Sometimes Wenger can be a bit stubborn.

I do think a lack of depth has crippled Arsenal in recent years. Admittedly there has been some bad luck in all the top names having serious injuries at one time or another but there just isn't the depth or experience of a United, Chelsea etc. I admire prudent stability in balancing the books but you have to invest to win the big trophies. Look at all the major winners in Europe and their domestic leagues and I reckon most if not all spent more than Arsenal on players last season

This genuinely wasnt an attempt to have a pop at the arse by the way.

I just feel that wenger has finally lost it. GK has always been a weakness for them recently.

There is prooven quality available and wenger is going for an old-timer.

Mad.

Wenger is a shrewd business man, he has proven in the past that he can buy cheap and still get top quality. Henry, Viera, Petit, Overmars, etc, etc.

He doesnt always get this right and especially with goalkeepers but his record is pretty good still.

I personally think swartzer is a good option he has lots of experience and a few good years left in him,if he really wants a top class keeper he has to go for Given, there are not many top class keepers available at this moment so i would probably break the bank and get Given whatever it takes.

Apart from Fergy, and Jose, there's noone out there that's done any better, and they've both spent gazillions.

I would hate to be in the situation that Liverpool are financially, and Utd gambled the whole of their club against continued success. They have been hugely successful and are just about holding their head about the floodwaters. However, loads of their fans are now crying out for financial stability rather than a few years success, followed by potential bankrupcy.

Forget about a few years without a trophy. Arsenal went from '71 to '79 with nothing, and then another ten blank years before hitting the big time. We'll have our day again.

Football is about the love for your club, it's not just about trophy hunters. I think too many people forget that.

I'd also prefer to have the success that Wenger has had over any other club in the land with the exception of Chelsea and Utd. I've already spoken about Utd. And Chelsea have spent fortunes which noone else could compete with to buy their success. They also sacked their manager coz it was ugly success. How greedy is that. And now Man City are richer than them, their trophy hunting fans are panicking that they may be sent back into the doldrums again.

Arsenal have almost got the balance right. Wenger is to thank for that, both in the good way in that ( unlike managers like Dirty Harry, for example ) he has safeguarded the future of the club, and also in the bad way, in that it is frustrating to be so close year after year to beating clubs that are willing to risk everything on the throw of a dice.

I'd like to see Wenger splurge a bit on Given, but tbh Schwarzer put in a request because of our interest, so it would be the gentlemanly thing to do, to follow through with our presumed agreement with him. Also, he is a far better keeper than those we already have, and will not let us down at all. I was more than happy when I saw we were chasing him, weeks before Given showed on the radar.

I'd trust Wenger with access to my bank account, as well as with the future of my football club.

Well look on the bright side, champions league football every year, no threat of going to the wall - infact Arsenal are now in the top 5 richest clubs in the world. We play great football and we are starting to integrate more young homegrown british talent, Wenger just signed another 3 year extension....

Ask any chairman in the entire league if they want all that but no trophy for the next 5 years and they will all say an emphatic yes.

This might well be beyond you but most people see the good that Wenger has done and continues to do.

I am an Arsenal fan who loves what Arsene is doing

Worry about your own club please

well put sir.

we continue to be the most financially stable club in thye premiership, we have half the future england team coming up through the yoot academy, are lauded as one of if not the best clubs to watch in europe and you never see our players (anymore) stumbling out of clubs, fag in one hand tart on t'other hammered sideways....

no complaints from me

Financial this, great job with yoofs,CL football that but the fact of the matter is you have won nowt for yonks, jesus even Spurs have managed a trophy!

Arsenal are in danger of becoming just another of the run of the mill teams that make up the numbers in the EPL.These teams look upon qualification for the CL as their nivarna and IMO there are a few this season in that catagory.

Surely as a fan seeing your team win trophies would be more satisfying than watching them play 'nice' football, finish 3rd-6th place, reach the semis of the CL and domestic cups and have a healthy bank balance?

Champions league and Epl are the only trophies worth winning the others are meerly cherries as long as I think we are progressing and we are, I am happy.

Portsmouth also won the FA cup recently it didn't make them a good team

Exactly. And they aren't easy to win especially when you're competing against sides like Chelsea and Utd domestically. If Arsenal are to win the league then it will be against all the odds. It's not a level playing field is it....

No one said Pompey were a good team. :D

Put it this way,if I was an Arsenal fan and watched them play lovely football, reach the final of the CL and finished 2nd a few times in the league over a ten year trophy barren period and I got knocked over by a bus and had to go to the clubhouse in the sky,I wouldn't be happy going good in the knowledge that we won sweet FA but played 'nice' football and had a healthy bank balance.......I would much rather I went with the memory that we had lifted the odd cup or two! ;)
