WATERPROOF Jacket and trousers

I have a set of proquip silktouch which are about five years old and have served me grandly with no issues. I've also got a set of FJ's and they too have never let me down although I get a feeling either one will get put to a real test when I play on Saturday.

The only problem I have with my galvin jacket is the neck is a bit wide, other than that it's kept me bone dry. I do need some trousers though but can't afford the galvins. So any suggestions welcome for a cheap pair of waterproof trousers!!

Sorry for hijacking, but what's the benefit of buying expensive golf-specific waterproofs as opposed to cheap general use ones? Is it extra water-proofing, longer lifespan, better fit etc? The reason I ask is that I bought a matching top and trousers (Trespass) years ago, before I ever held a club, from one of the High Street outdoor stores (Millets or something). They are thin and lightweight and roll up easily into one of the side pockets in the bag. I wore them on Sunday during 5 holes of really heavy rain and was perfectly dry afterwards. They would only have set me back £20-30 or so.

Other than looking like you going trekking over the mountains possibly none:)

@Rapper. Sounds like your WPs have lost their WP quality. There's a product that I have used successfully to restore WP-ing - NikWax, which can be bought on Ebay (or elsewhere).

Galvin Green jackets are top notch, thou I too have had problems with the neck (Cross necks work much better). GG pants are great, but so are most others, so I can't see the point of paying that much for them.

@Ping. Looks like you got yourself a great deal. Golf specific WPs tend to have pockets around the back so swing is not hampered. This sort of specialisation allows companies to charge double what would be the norm otherwise!

Cheap waterproofs will have your ballocks wetter than the grass. You'd be like a boil in the bag meal with cheapos after 18 holes.

I think you could well be a victim of the 'Marketing Society' here. While Ping only specified 5 holes on Sunday, I'm pretty sure he'd have played and survived (dry) 18 holes at other times over the years.

High quality, breathable, WPs at an appropriate (reasonable) price is what everybody (specially Scots) should be looking for. And Sunderland make some pretty good examples too! Buy Scottish, not Swedish!

My Waterproof Troos are Proquip and survived the first day of the Ryder Cup until about 3pm - quite impressed with that.
They still work fine

Jacket is a Mizzy Impermalite - quality jacket.

I used to a lot of mountaineering - both UK and abroad - and over the years had a huge variety of gear from all price brackets from cheap to outrageous. Have to say that the Galvin Green is the first jacket I've had that has kept me totally dry - even in Scotland...

I'm not a victim of marketing society, 11 years with hm forces and spent many many day in rain, I know good waterproofs from bad, I have a Sunderland suit which is very good but you will not beat gore tex hence why I also have a pair of galvin green strides from ebay at £50 and a Nike Paclite gore tex jacket(on offer from outdoor shop at £40). Paclite is cheap gore tex but good enough for a golf course.
