Just wondering what does anyone else think, how much of an effect do you think it has on the chances of holing a putt?

Personally I'm always careful not to stand on another players line but if anyone stands on mine I don't really care. Chances are someone from the previous groups have walked on it anyway so not too worried. I'd never blame it on missing a putt

I don't really care if someone stands on my line either. Might make a difference if you're playing on perfect greens but I'm not in the USA or on the Tour that often!!

I probably stand on someone else's line about once per year.

whilst I agree about the fact that someone has relatively recently walked there it's basic etiquette not to do so - which really says it all.

Basic etiquette although to be fair unless the greens are exceptionally wet, frosty etc it won't make any difference. I think it then becomes psychological and you suddenly think it will affect the putt and won't hole it so you don't

I do not know how much of a difference it makes if any, but I would not like it done on my line therefore wouldn't do it on someone else's line. Last night during a friendly a mate said finish off there and don't worry about his line, I still couldn't bring myself to stand on it lol

In different threads there's talk of accepting slow play, mobile phones, relaxed dress code. AND NOW ITS OK TO WALK ON SOMEONE'S LINE?...

I don't doubt that in the height of summer there won't be a foot print but what about spike marks. I suppose you could always attempt to repair them... if you were allowed to touch your opponent's line.

One of the very few things that annoy me on a golf course! :(

How hard is it to keep track of where everyone is (3 people max!) it's not like we play in 12 ball scrambles!!!!

Worse offence is the ones who take some elaborate stance thinking they are straddling your line but have only succeeded in planting their size 10 bang on your intended line!! Just mark it and wait!!!

I regularly play with a heavy built chap with large feet.
He's very good at the straddling stance when tapping in.
Then he bends down to pick ball out of hole and plants his size 12 foot 6" from hole right on my line!

When everyone used metal spikes it was a big issue and could effect a putt but with the new
softspikes I don't get that het up about it. I would still tell them off
and ask them not to do it again but agree with Homer that it is just basic etiquette.

I wouldn't do it and would expect others to be careful as well, but the chances are with up to to 4 people retrieving balls from the hole only 5 or 10 minutes before you that someone has already stepped on your line.

I try my best not to step on others lines and I am disappointed if someone does it without looking. I'm sure it doesn't make much difference to my putt if someone accidently steps on my line, it's more about the fact they aren't being considerate.

At times it will matter, I've seen a 12 inch putt be deflected off line by a defined footprint 4 inches in front of the hole. It wasn't even made by one of the group on the hole.

NM, that winds me up when that happens. Normally I would say something afterwards about it to the guy that does that. It tends to be the same guy too and he has the cheek to moan when other people tread on his line too.

i think some on here would be in for a shock if they played in some of the comps i play in,it is NOT ok to walk on someones line or to talk or drop the flag stick as someone is putting neither is it ok to ram your putter down the hole to scoop your ball out, have a novelty mobile ringtone that is amusing down the pub but not on the golf course and make excessive noise when playing, and walking on before your playing partners have hit their shots, looking at some who post on here basic golfing etiquette seems foreign to them.
