I played the older model from 1975 to 1977. They were bought by my dad in 1969.
How I wish I had kept them rather than giving them away.

I had the 3 iron around 1970. The shaft snapped mid-grip, cutting through the grip and into my hand. Didn’t bother with a repair, just binned it.

but the resale value of used clubs is so modest
that I see no reason for not keeping the retired bags as den decorations.

Tiger Shark Triple Crown___sand/lob wedge
Ram Zebra___putter

My uncle bought these circa 1954 when he got home from Korea
and eventually handed them down to me; they were my first set:

MacGregor Tourney Tommy Armour___1, 3, 4 woods
Wilson Staff Dynapowered ___2-9 irons
Spalding Cash In___putter
I added cheap department store wedges.

So you've got four of my sets right here.

That collection of persimmon is very impressive but it's come up for sale a few times over the last year or two. I can understand the seller wanting to sell as one lot, but realistically just how many people are there wanting to buy such a collection for such a price?

Played with hickorys for 9 holes in a competition last week. Part of the club's 150th celebrations.
Period outfit required, guy from Coventry came up and give a 10 min history of golf presentation, then loaned sets of clubs in old pencil bags out.

Takeaways: irons easier than expected, though took huge deep divots compared to normal. Woods were tricky.... putting was 'off the charts' difficult! Who knew that would be the hardest part!!! Happy to be back to the normal sticks this weekend! ))

Nice! Now you've tried hickory you should try classic/vintage, they're much easier to find and quite a bit cheaper to buy.

Personally I find hickory woods the hardest to hit, probably because I've not found a good one yet! Putting is the easy part for me, probably because most of my classic putters aren't too far removed from hickory styles.

I played hickory "sixsomes" yesterday, six players in a group with pairs playing two matches against the other two pairs, good fun but I'm glad my partner was keeping the score...

I've been tinkering with two purchases from early this year over the last couple of days.
Wilson Walter Hagen 2 and 4 woods with aluminium shafts. Not much to do except new grips.
MacGregor Tourney Custom woods 1, 3, 4 and 5. Sole plates looking awful, but faces fairly sound.
All 6 clubs varnished today.
It was the sole plates of the 4 MacGregors that was the most time-consuming task.

I bought the above set of Petron Impala 1 to 10 and SW last year.
The 10-iron is 50° and the SW is 60°. That puzzled me. Should there be a 55° or 56° PW as well. But that would leave room for only driver and putter.

Bought last night. The elusive 55° PW. How unlikely to turn up on its own?

I think my Dad had a 1/2 set of those ( we have them in the garage- but I have not sorted his golf gear out lately) and I had Mizuno impact before getting the Mizuno TP18s

Louisville Golf and Tad Moore both sell some cool hickory-shafted replica clubs.
They're playable with modern balls, although lower compression is suggested for those fiber inserts on the woods.
They're also expensive, however.

The iron lofts are about three clubs weaker than modern clubs,
and those butter knife blades might create very good habits if practiced with.
You don't want to go fat or thin with those, so you swing within yourself for fewer mishits.

It is the numbers on the soles of modern clubs that have changed.

Dunlop Bob Charles (RIGHT HANDED) 3-SW irons in fab condition.

circa 1970 as the resident aficionado informs me.





Should make a nice set with the MacGregor Tourney woods above on post #1249. They will all have matching new grips, eventually.

12/08/24 EDIT: They arrived today and I think they look better than the seller's photos above.
And 3 days ago I collected the Wilson X31 set shown above in post #1253. These are also amazing condition.
They have leather grips, but not wound strips. One piece with a seam down the back. Never seen these before. I will have to take a photo tomorrow.
