Just seen on the news that last night a game in Germany had an incident where at the end of the first half, the teams had left the field for half time, then VAR showed there should have been a penalty in the dying seconds.

So the Ref got both teams out of the changing rooms, the penalty was taken and scored, then it was half time again.

What is going on, we have VAR in Rugby, with only a very small time lag. Are Football using a different type of VAR?
If so, it’s not working. It’s farcical

What is Rugby doing differently?

There’s going to be a few more of these mistakes but overall VAR is definitely the right direction to go and will benefit football in the long run.

Just teething problems that’s all.

It has to be said, though, that if there are teething problems, why the hell is it going to be used in the World Cup?
These teething problems should have been sorted out at lower level matches before even thinking about putting them into the upper tiers of the game.
Ludicrous and embarrassing situation last night....

It’s poor and its ruined games so far and will continue to ruin games - the World Cup will be a farce because of it

It’s poor implementation and it’s been used by incompetent people

Get rid of it - don’t see it’s needed

If you're not going to have it then football fans need to learn to accept that mistakes will be made and not complain when it happens.
If it can be made to work properly and not slow the game unduly then it will be good
But until then....

I also find it funny that you get pundits dissecting every decision to the nth degree with super slow mo replays, who in the process are undermining the refs authority and trust in the officials. Which then leads to phone in shows made up of swivel eyed loons berating the ref for their teams poor performance. And everyone then starts moaning when refs are given a fraction of the technology and help that is freely available to pundits to help them make a decision when every one of the 22 players on the pitch is trying gain an advantage and pull the wool over the refs eyes.

VAR will be the best thing introduced to football EVER. (Until they adopt my new offside rule). The problem at the moment is that they are having it operated by morons. This is because football thinks it knows everything and does not need to consult other sports who have had it operating successfully for years, on how to use it correctly to minimise disruption on the field of play.
Football is that Johnny knowall we all know in the pub that know flip all about flip all. Everyone who cannot see that VAR will actually improve things should go back to the dark ages and hand back their mobile phones, Laptops, Tablets etc as they go. Good grief!

^^^^^ This

The system is fine, it is currently being operated poorly. There should be a time limit on a review, players should be on the pitch until that time period is complete. To let them leave the pitch was incompetence.

Next year, when it's not being used in the Premiership, I hope that none of the people who want rid of it get annoyed when the ref or linesman makes a mistake which could have easily been spotted by VAR.

It may be slow but at least it seems to be correct. It needs improving not removing!

Having debates about decisions etc is all part of the game after and all the pub talk etc again is all part of the game

Now I have no issues with decisions that are clearly hard to see and are judgement calls - now the issues I have are incidents that happen right under the refs noses - the perfect example is the Davies incident on Kompany - right in front of the ref who clearly saw it but bottled it by only giving him a yellow and then what should change it what happens after - because it was only a yellow it can’t be upgraded when it should be

Change what can happen after the game - allow any incidents to be looked at again and be punished including diving and violent conduct regardless of what the ref has done during the game

There is so many things that can be done first before throwing VAR into it - always been adament that VAR won’t work in football and so far its being shown to be the case. If you are going to bring it in then it should be used for occasions where a penalty is being decided or if it’s a red card or not - both cases where the ref has already blown and needs clarification and then they need the decisions from the VAR to be done in two mins at the most

I’m fully behind the use of VAR, but it should be like in rugby where you have a fourth referee watching the whole game and is able to highlight to the on field ref anything that needs looking at, as well as answering the on field refs question.
It’s no good complaining about how poor the refs are if you’re not going to give them the help they need in the modern game.

Having a debate is fine, but nowadays it just seems to be a constant undermining of the officials by pundits, managers, and fans by dissecting every decision and trying to deflect the blame for their teams loss/draw onto the officials. I'm pretty sure there was a study once that proved it is impossible to give off side correctly as a human can not be looking at two places at the same time. Yet they are berated for getting it wrong when they are seeing it in real time. I just think this culture of blaming officials has gone too far, if most fans were capable of having a debate and agreeing that some you win, some you lose, then fine. But increasingly the media who are trying their best to hype up any game, games that are now worth 10s of millions, does not allow that. And I'd argue has indirectly lead to VAR being introduced to give the officials a chance to get more things right.

I think it will be a good thing.

Watching football used to drive me nuts, to the point I stopped watching/following it completely, certainly see this as a positive change.

Just have to stop all the fake stuff now.

Asking for officials to be at least part competent to do a half decent job isn’t undermining them

Even more so when they aren’t asked to explain any decisions they make - the FA protect them far too much , offsides have always been tight calls - im not particular bothered about them because some you get and some you don’t but it’s the critical calls that happen right under their noses that they get wrong that don’t need endless replays to be seen to be the incorrect call. And then when they add in those statues behind the goal who just do nothing when they could help out

There are so many things that could happen before they throw in VAR. VAR is going to be a crutch for them to lean on - they are going to use it constantly when they don’t have the strength to make a call and it’s going to ruin the sport.

^^This^^
Picking and choosing which decisions can and can’t be reviewed is stupid, all or nothing for me.

Should be introduced for all games in competitions were it’s used, not just 1 or 2 ties out of 8 etc.

All the problems/issues etc could of been avoided in they had trialled it in a lower league at all matches for 1 or 2 seasons.

VAR will help, but whilst there is so much cheating going on then mistakes will still be made. I've never seen so many 'good' dives as I have this year. I feel for refs in these situations...the pundits always say "there was contact as he left a leg in so its a pen" . Tackling is becoming redundant in football these days.

I wonder if there will be a penalty given at every corner due to shirt pulling if VAR comes in ???

Rugby took a while to get to where it is but the pace of the sport and the general extended use of advantage in penalty situations before stopping play means that it lends itself better to the use of video.
What also helps is that there is normally excellent communication between the ref and the video ref. In rugby you can hear all of this at home or even on headsets at the ground. The video ref will flag up a concern, have a look and talk it out with the ref as play continues.
The use of questions is also very important. There is a massive difference in the ref asking 'is there any reason not to award a try' and 'try, yes or no' and the video ref looks at the pictures based on what the ref has asked.
In all honesty, I cannot see it working in football. The pace of play is too high and the advantage rule is too different to allow play to be called back. Goal line technology I can see working but VAR is just not suited to the game.
