whats peoples perceptions of 5 woods? what clubs do they replace/sub or what gap do they fill?

Mine slots in nicely between my 3W (approx 220 yards) and my 3 hybrid (approx 180 yards) and goes about 200. Higher flight than my hybrid strangely and just sort of fits my needs

In most people's cases the gap between their 3W and Hybrid/3 Iron. I have no such gap so don't carry a 5 wood at all.

great clubs, for me 200 yards ish of carry , nice and high ball flight
easier to hit than a 3 iron and goes further by about 5-10 yards

fairway woods have a lower weight distribution than hybrids, or irons, and dleiver a higher launch angle and a higher flight for any given loft.
with the lack of roll and heavy air currently I have the 5 wood back in the bag at the moment, and it's working well. In my case it's between the 3 iron and 3 wood

I have a bit of a weird set-up as I carry a 5w and a 17* hybrid. Both are around the 210yd mark but I carry the 5w for higher flight shots, softer landing whereas the hybrid is for more low level attacking.
Seems to work for me as I used to put my 3i around 200yds but it was erratic, now I have distance and control.

Yep. Same for me, except a couple of yards shorter on the 3 wood.
My favourite club, even when I topped 4 in a row the other day.

so, for me, a 5 wood would sit between my 3 wood and 3 hybrid? im going with my 3 hybrid about 195 yds and my 3 wood about 220 yds

So you'd be, ideally, targeting that gap at around 210ish. Hit a few and see what distance you get and see if it does indeed fill the gap. might turn out that you still only hit it 195 or 200 and wouldn't be much point.

I carry a 20 degree 5-wood and a 17 degree 5-wood 
The 20 goes 205yds and the 17 goes circa 230. I like the 20 as it's great from the fringe/light rough as I can get away with delofting it slightly as I hit down on it. 17 is great from the fairway and off a low tee.

Loft for loft, a wood will go higher than a hybrid. The lower centre of gravity, which is also further back, gets the ball in the air quicker and imparts more spin to keep the ball in the air.Don't forget, most hybrids have more loft then most woods.so it appears that the hybrid goes higher. But put a 19 degree wood against a 19 degree hybrid and, all things being equal, the wood should go higher.

I have never been fond of woods, I was fine with a driver but I have always been an iron man. I do own a 5 wood but I got a hybrid to try instead and found a better bag setup for me went 3 wood, 3 hybrid, 3 iron... The shaft length and loft differences make it a really nicely balanced top end.
I doubt I will pop my 5 wood back in, my bag used to go 5 wood, 3 iron and a 60* lobber at the other end (4 wedge!!!!). I just prefer the flight of the hybrid over the 5 wood, I cannot explain it, I just dont like the wood.

Had 1 years ago - and even a (Killer Whale) 7-wood.
As I naturally hit the ball high, I went the hybrid way (Sonartec MD) and concentrated on distances at the other end of the bag. Went from 12 to 7, so that (and practice) seemed to pay off.

I have a 2 hybrid instead of a 5 wood.
Got fitted for a fairway wood recently and ended up with a 4 wood (17 degrees).
My hybrid is also 17 degrees!
Get 230-240 from the 4 wood and 215-220 from the hybrid (at the fitting at least
).

Love my 5 wood. A bit more forgiving than the 3 (which is mostly used for driving) particularly off an iffy lie and goes also most as far (especially down wind) with a lovely flight.

Manufacturers have various ways of creating high launch and low launch woods and hybrids therefore it cannot be assumed that a wood will have a higher flight than a hybrid.
Although you may be able to distribute the weight further back in a wood, a hybrid has a shorter shaft which will give a steeper angle of attack and therefore higher launch which is why they are good out of the rough.
I use a 5 wood as a gap stop between my 3 and 7 woods. It is a very good club off the fairway and the tee and if I had to be restricted to one wood in my bag it would be the one I would choose.

i don't have a hybrid!!! i use a 3w and a 5w for all my longer shots and never had much trouble,i can hit them both high and low running shots which ever the condition dictates,am i old fashioned or am i not alone.

I have a 9 wood somewhere. You can hit it, sip from your hipflask and light a cigar before it comes down.
It's the same loft as some hybrids, which are curiously nowhere near as entertaining, or as dangerous to light aircraft.
