A friend of mine has asked me to recommend a free app to track his scores and give him an unofficial handicap. He’s a casual golfer and so doesn’t want to go down the route of subscribing to England golf, getting cards signed etc, just wants an idea of where he’s at.

Anyone have any recommendations?

I do wonder if the apps for handicap do work for those starting out.
Does one do all the necessary adjustments for the 1st 3 cards and the next 17 cards?

Or do they simply take the best and do the wrong maths until it gets to 20?

One of my mates uses Garmin app for this, he said. I think there's one called The Grint that does it too. Hole19 can do it as well, but I don't know if it's a Premium (i.e. paid for) feature - probably is.

Do you need an app? Can't you just keep your scores and make a guesstimate. The App won't know things like PCC for the day anyway.

England Golf offers a free iPlay service for score tracking; it includes an average score indicator but no handicap.

Golfshake offers a free unofficial handicap service that is recognised by some tournament organisers (like Mizuno pairs).

Thanks for the recommendations. I’ve pointed him in the direction of vpar as that’s got live scoring, yardages, as well as the handicap.

The free version of 18 birdies will give you an unofficial handicap as well as its scoring, shot tracking and GPS functions. It’s a lot of app for free!
