Toughest hole you've ever played...

So, what's the toughest hole you've ever played?

Mine is this one Winterfield 1st hole, in Dunbar, East Lothian.

I have only played this course twice, the first time, was the first time I had swung a club, apart from when about 12 in a park...

Par 3, elevated tee, elevated green, 238 yards... :p

Not a great introduction to golf!!!

:o

I'll go along with the Winterfield one. Not that hard to play but hard to par. One or two holes at North Berwick west come to mind where luck comes into play more than skill. I'll give a shout for Dunbar east links with two 460 yard par fours one after the other. Come away from them one over and you're doing well....at any level.

16th at Old Tom Morris links at Rosapenna there a par three that is 167 yards that ALWAYS plays into the wind last time I had to hit my 17 degree hybrid and was one of the few who hit the green.

The 4th, 446 yard Par 4( Lighthouse ) at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club.

First shot is a blind 200 yarder, then you still have 240+ left across a valley to a raised tee !!!

The other way to play it is to drive the first shot, but you MUST hit 275+ yards otherwise you are in the mess and gorse.

Walk off with a bogey and be very happy !!

Luckily its a par 5 off the whites.

I mine would have to be the par 3 2nd at Royal Dornoch.

Its only 177 yards off the whites but usually into the wind to a raised green with 2 big pot bunkers front left and right so anything short is in there. Plus its a raised green thats not very wide, so if do don't hit the middle of the green it just rolled down the 10 foot slope either side :(

The last hole I played!!

If not then take your pick of any at Royal County Down especially if the wind is in your face, the 1st at Ballyliffin is up there too.

Gotta be the 210 yard par 3 14th at Royal Portrush... They call it "calamity corner" and it just the most intimidating looking hole I've ever seen.

The view from the tee:

Oh my god!, yes that has brought back memories.. this is truly the hardest hole and scariest hole I have ever played.

It was blowing a gale that day , I had a driver out and played it very left, ended up in some gorse back of the hole and carded a bogey (which was a result!)

Other holes which were silly hard were some of the crazy ones at Monte Mayor in Spain...

1st hole at Scrabo is such a good and impossible hole to start your round. Christie O'Connor (Senior) rated it as the best opening hole in Ireland.
Par 4 Index 1, 460 yards uphill, gorse left and right, 25 yard wide fairway with carpark and valley short and right you cant see half of this in the summer due to tree and bush cover etc but you know it is there.
Drive into the funnel, the further you dare to hit it, the more rewarding it becomes. The second shot can either be laid up into a wide fairway crossing or go for the green in regulation which has OOB up the right and virtually blind green is narrow protected by mounds and more gorse, OOB around the back of the green (5 yards through the green) also for good measure.
I honestly don't think I have ever broke a 6 on that hole.

This is a classic example of how thinking in a different way helps you play the hole better.

Brendy, if the tee marker said "Par 5" you would think what an easy opening hole. 3 W, 6 iron, SW. 1 putt birdie.

What you probably do is try and make 4 and screw it up and take 6.

It's the first hole..............hungover, no warm up, first swing, could go anywhere......... AND you get a shot. :)

excellent point, do it that way and you'll be scoring 5 as a worst score and maybe a few pars, do it! DO IT! DO IT!

Do you know what it is Bob?
I hit the ball a good old whack and was always fairly straight with it but occasionally found trouble. Recently have done a lot of thinking and started hitting a lot of irons from the tee etc (7 out of last 10 cards were bz and better with 3 cuts resulting in 1.0 off the HC) Last time I played Scrabo it was driver everywhere, I hit my 3 iron as far as the rest of the guys in my fourball hit their driver so when I hit it I dont feel like I am throwing away much distance and can still reach all of the holes in regulation, sometimes it actually works out better as I have a full shot in instead of a half wedge which has the shank creep in occasionally.
You are bang on about thinking though, I think I may be taking too many irons at the moment though as there are a couple of doglegs where the driver can go over the corner but the iron is played to the corner, sometimes blocking myself out so might have to rethink those two holes and maybe a 3 wood.

I stand by my choice as Scrabo though, it is a stormer of a first hole, the next couple arnt much easier. If you want difficulty with a great view, Scrabo or Ardglass pay back in bucketloads.

Think its the 7th at Mollington.

630 yard par 5. With a huge pond/small lake at about 280-300 yards from the tee. Now i'm not saying I can drive 300 yards, but its all down hill and it runs. Even if its short, your on a crap down hill lie playing to a raised second fairway.

Most have to lay up with tee shots. And then ther is NO chance of making the green in two and ALMOST impossible to make it in 3. A par feels like a birdie there.

IMO its the worst hole ive ever played! No rewards at all

It probably isn't that tough, but the 1st at Carrick-On-Shannon GC is one that I found pretty tough. It isn't that long if I remember, about a 350 yard par 4. The issues are that it's got OOB on the right so you play into a narrow fairway, in the middle of which is an island of tall trees and rough. You then play blind, straight up a steep hill to a blind green which is tiny and guarded by a burn.

Best I managed was a 5, and I was lucky to get that :)

Ardglass is great. I will be playing it some time between 17 and 25 Sept, and might try to fit in Scrabo too.

Will be giving RCD a miss this time, as it is way too expensive (and if I don't play well, and I probably won't, I'll get the hump at the waste of money). Might sneak a few on the Annesley Links instead.

Love Ardglass I do, in a remote little part of Co Down and never seems to be over populated on course.
Scrabo is a decent course backed up by great views, there are better courses but as far as difficulty and panoramas go, this one isnt bad.
Failing Scrabo, you could try Belvoir in South Belfast or Malone a couple of miles up the road from it.
The Annesley is a cracking little course, not the longest but certainly has little elements of the big course.

Probably a hole on National GC in Belek, Turkey. It's a long par4 on the back 9, about the 14th or 15th. You drive uphill over a crest and between trees which is hard enough but then you get over the crest to see a narrow fairway that has a gentle right to left slope that leans towards the lake that is all along the left side of the fairway from about 225 yards out. The second shot must then be played to a green that is angled out into the lake slightly with deep bunkers right to catch a bail out. Visually very intimidating. I've never hit the green in 2 but have parred it a few times by getting up and down from the sand.
