Thursday rant

Nature of forums at times

It may seem a bit “snidey” at the moment but it’s a huge step from where it was when there was about 6 or 7 political threads going on

The coronavirus thread took a nasty turn but thankfully a mod step in and cleared it up

The football thread will always been snidey etc

The sun is shining , the golf courses are open ,there are lots of other threads where there is some great debate and chat going on

And I’m nearly off work for a week golfing ???‍♂️

it's so easy to go off some people!

Not trolling you at all. But you have chosen to ignore a moderator’s request elsewhere, instead trying to perpetuate a thread which is dead in the water.

And the post I quoted here was so ironic, given your performance on that other thread, that I almost spat out my coffee.

Have a word with yourself.
You are proving bobmac's point somewhat..

Thread moaning about petty arguments and people not letting things go turns into exactly that on the first page.

On a brighter note, I’m sat outside at the golf club having a nice cold drink enjoying the fact I’ve just broken 80 for the first time in a very long time.
Think there is a song for that ?

Well done on breaking 80 ?

Are you back at Stoneham ?

I'm not perpetuating anything, man asked question man got answer. Meanwhile you took offence and instead of reporting me you chose to troll around after me, like you are now. If you can't see the irony in that then there really is no hope.

It takes a lot more than your diatribe to offend me. Congratulations, though. For the first time since I first started visiting this forum many years ago I’m going to give the “Ignore” facility a whirl.

I took a little break for a while recently after I’d wound a few people up. Not an enforced break I should add... and I’ve returned lately to see not much has changed and the same old people still love a good old Barney. Nature of the beast for me and I don’t think it would be an issue if the forum wasn’t attached to the magazine but obviously they want to protect their brand so certain perfectly natural conversations must be curtailed. The world will keep turning.

Not yet, playing at New Forest currently so breaking 80 is a bit less to shout about (par 69), but still a milestone on the way to hopefully getting to single figures. Had a triple bogey on the fourth which wasn’t ideal, but then nothing worse than a bogey for the rest of the round.

Will look at rejoining Stoneham if I can justify it along with having a bit more time to play.

Breaking 80 on any course is always worth shouting about ?

Good to see you back playing and hopefully back at Stoneham soon - is a great course , some of the best greens we played on the other year

I was 2 strokes from breaking 80 for the first time yesterday!!! Congrats to you sir.

It's a lot easier for people to be outraged and show extreme views at a keyboard than it is face-to-face. Many of the things said on here would not be said if the people were facing each other. Unfortunately, extreme views on one side do see anyone disagreeing with them as extremists for the other side. I see some wild statements on here from both the Left and Right. Just because I disagree with them does not make me extreme either way, but some people throw out statements such as "facist", "leftie", etc. as it helps to suit their particular agenda. I think I've only got 2 or 3 on my ignore list, but that is where someone was being argumentative and contrary just for the sake of it, and making ludicrous unfounded statements to get a rise, and I wasn't rising.

Not to diminish your point, and not particularly related to the (ex) thread I believe you're referring to, but equally some things that are said on here that people take offence to are only said because the two people involved know or have met each other and have no issue with what is said. I don't need anyone to be offended about things on my behalf; if I'm offended I'll deal with it.

I’ll also add to the point about stuff that people wouldn’t say in person - I definitely would say the things I’ve said on here in person. I stand by my opinions. I’d also assume that people would be good enough to not threaten me with physical violence for my opinions but as we’ve witnessed on here before, some people will threaten others.

What I find strange/worrying is that people actually take the time and effort to type in their hatred, I could almost understand it if it was said face to face in the heat of the moment but having to think and type, then still come out with the same rubbish is scary ?

Not necessarily, I sometimes throw out likes because I find something amusing but I may not agree 100% with the post.
I’m talking about the threads and posts Bob is on about in his op, not posts in general and also why I said majority and not all.(y)

Having only returned to the forum after a bit of time away I see a huge difference in what is debated and chatted about. There is a huge number of posters who don't post much where 4 years ago they were posting 20 times a day (me included probably).

There is very little being offered for sale now, it used to be a daily occurance in putters being offered or requests for pencil bags

I used to post on this forum years ago then took a break for several years, returning this month. I am very surprised at the amount the forum has changed in that time. A fraction of the activity that there was previously and yes, the for sale section seems almost defunct.

It also feels like there is more of a likelihood of being moderated and additionally, there is clearly a clique or two. And I get a sense that airing a view that goes counter to the groupthink would result in something of a genteel pile-on. For example, I have got a diametrically different opinion to the general consensus on the Coronavirus thread but there's no way I would share it because I feel like there would be a collective backlash, complete with thinly-veiled insults, so why bother? Perhaps not the best example though as this forum should be about golf! There is precious little content on all things golf here now in comparison to a few years ago.

A real shame as this was the best golf forum in the UK.

In a general sense, I agree with Mike Tyson here: "Social media made you all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it.” :)

I don't think that's true is it? There is one sub-section which is exclusively golf chat, and then you have this sub-section which is non-golf chat. Both seem adequately stocked to me.

Hmmm. My opinion is that compared to say 2015 for arguments sake, there is very little.

I sort of agree, it si a very different place to where it has been in the past. There is actually more activity in the out of bounds section now rather than the golf section.

There used to be informal forum meet ups most weeks but that has disappeared as well.

It is still a very decent forum just not the forum it was in the past. Then again, I suspect that much of that is a result of changes in society where there is simply no respect for other people's views, no room for nuanced debate and if you do not agree with someone now you are a harbinger of hate and prejudice rather than simply being a person with a different take on a situation.
