I only joined the forum during lockdown 2, with genuine golfing questions, but the OoB stuff does draw you in, sometimes.
I like to think I'm an open-minded, middle of the road moderate, but some of the stuff that gets posted does beg a response. I suspect that some of those on either extreme post inflammatory content knowing it will get a reaction and relishing the excuse to trade insults and pejorative names.
All in all, the forum has helped pass a lot of dead time and I've gleaned some useful golfing advice.
The dementia awareness thread has been a real positive.

I only joined the forum in the middle of last year. So I can't comment on the good old days beforehand. But the vast majority of the comments, interactions and threads have been both fun and interesting at the same time - atleast they have been to me as a noobie and I'm very glad I've come across you all. There is generally always the odd one out who seem to be spoiling for an argument, but that is no different from anybody's local, golf club or extended family Christmas dinner. I really enjoyed the H4H day last year, and am looking to more meets in the future. The fact that people meet in real life here makes it very different from your usual social media free for all.
One thing I have noticed is that the activity in the forum as well as organized meets seem to be quite male dominated (and obviously older). But leaving age aside, do women golfers not find the forum and meets (or even the magazine which hosts it) as inviting? Golf is a unique sport in which both genders can enjoy at the same time.

The nice folk far outweigh the wombats. The ignore button is there for a reason. Life's too short to care otherwise.
My wife came on a meet pre Covid and really enjoyed it, even though I had to nag her to go. But she would never use the forum as it isnt her sort of thing!

I struggle with the Ignore button. I've a few people on ignore but try to limit the number as I don't want to live in an echo chamber. Also, quite a few occasional visitors to my ignore list are extremely prolific posters. It makes some threads hard to follow when chunks disappear.
Some of the wombats are perfectly reasonable on a number of subjects. There's just some subjects that they can't resist being wombat'ish. I'd like an "ignore this thread" button, or even better - an "ignore this person on this thread" button.

Today I played at Downfield and I found out that an ex forum member is a member there. He was not without opinion and some people may have had him on ignore as he used to speak his mind especially about TOC.

I've never used it. Blocking someone out altogether seems a bit childish - "la la I'm not listening". I have enough control over my emotions to simply ignore the words of someone I think is a tool, but I still want to see them, as you say you can totally lose context in a thread otherwise.

I've been on here 13 years, and whilst not a prolific poster I read a fair few threads. I tend to treat the entrenched arguments as i would in real life, and distance myself from them.I don't use ignore button, coz I'm an optimist and believe everybody has some good points/opinions in them somewhere, and I don't want to exclude viewpoints just because they may be different to mine.
But what I do get from the forum is a a dose of experience and expertise from a group of generally like minded people who share a common interest. When I ask a question I value the input I get back given the wide ranging backgrounds and interests of people. I laugh out loud occasionally, and use the like button when people make me smile or articulate a point well.
Sure, it's changed a lot over the years and people have come and gone. But I value it even if I have to turn the volume down on some threads.

However, there are some opinions that have been expressed on these forums that are so wrong that they make me wonder if the person is capable of any opinion worth listening to. Anyone who prefers brown sauce on a bacon roll should be ignored by everyone forever!!

I've used it in the past because some on here just go out of their way to get a bite, which in my opinion is more childish, that it's the easier option not to see it than to read it and not react. I have to listen to it & rise above it at work but I'm paid to do it there. Here I'm not so if putting people on ignore saves me having to do that I'll use the facility.

This what made me stop cominig on here. I look in now and again, but not too oftern. In the early days I was on here everyday chattting. There is way too much petty argueing going on. I look at the people posting and I very rarely see anyone from the early days 10 years ago. Remeber the old farts Vs whippersnappers back in 2012 at Woodhall? How many of the people from there still come on here, just curious.
