The Masters 2025

McIlroy IS British.

As am I, that is what it says on my passport anyway
It always confuses me so I Googled to check.

No, Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain, although it is part of the United Kingdom. Great Britain refers to the island of Great Britain, which is composed of England, Scotland, and Wales. The United Kingdom, on the other hand, is the sovereign state that includes Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Just another reason I don't feel 'British' I guess. Don't even know what it means.

I know what the island of Great Britain is. But, look up the definition of British and who it applies to.

Also, I recommend you never have this debate in Northern Ireland, could be very risky :ROFLMAO:

Not saying there's a right or wrong answer here, but I always feel more English than British. Hence I've never considered McIlroy, or Andy Murray for example a 'home' player as such - I feel no national connection to them. McIlroy isn't even British, he's UK - so you would say you consider your nationality to be United Kingdomish if you feel a kinship with him? I don't know if it's a generational thing either.

Rory is British - that’s what his passport says

I'm equally confused. Might not say Blighty mind. COME ON GB. Yep that's more like it. Is it allowed to shout COME ON EUROPE in The Ryder Cup or is that silly flag waving too? Just trying to figure out where the line is drawn in supporting one's nation. Maybe COME ON CITY is also silly flag waving? Who knows. It's adding to my insecurity wondering about it though...

Flags divide us all

Killing in the name of flags throughout history

Nations behind one flag better than another flag

Sport rivals under flags

Take Europe, one land mass divided by flags (united by a different flag)

Flags cause division

Flags don’t divide people

Attitudes do

The Olympics in 2012 was massive for the nation and provided a lot of goodwill

Sport is just sport at the end of the day

Right, ok. You've side-stepped the question, but I guess in a roundabout way you're saying that you feel more British than English then? I think some, like me, who don't feel that way find the jingoism from English people a bit strange for the likes of McIlroy and Murray who aren't English, but British. We don't feel like that in football for example, since there is no 'British' team, they compete as separate nations, so no reason to feel attachment to a Scottish or Northern Irish player.

Fine, I mean, I'm not trying to take the mick and I certainly don't do politics, I just genuinely find that all confusing. You are not in Britain but you are British. It's a lot of faff and nonsense, and perhaps one of the reasons I think of myself as English - it's consistent, and simpler.

They can but they can also do the exact opposite. As Phil has said - it's more about the attitude of the person/people waving the flag.

I'm first and foremost English. I also identify as British :-) It is all rather confusing though when I think about Andy and Rory vs say the Scottish or Irish footie teams.

Now you've got me even more insecure!

This is probably why I've never got into the Olympics as well! They are playing for GB but I don't identify as British so I don't relate to it. 🤷‍♂️
