The Masters 2025

Only Tiger and Faldo have won from being 7 behind the leader on day 1 before, I think it's done for this year.

Let's just hope for a great shoot off come Sunday. Would be happy with Aberg or Rose.

Why is it every time there is a bad shot or round the talk goes to his caddy 🤷‍♂️
Because they have an important role to play. Look at good caddies through the years. Fanny and Faldo, Furyk and Fluff Cowan, Langer and Peter Coleman, Watson and Alfie Fyles, Woosnam and Wobbly Moreby and all won majors with their caddies playing pivotal roles and being able to step in at the right time and make sure their charge is not over thinking or taking unnecessary risks. Clearly Rory's isn't helping him when the going is tough

It was funny to listen to Gary player manage to turn a question about tiger eating fast food in 97 into a 5 minute answer about him living to 100 and his new younger girlfriend. What a player and legend of the game but my god he can be a hard listen

Is the bird noise edited in, cos it’s the same sound, regardless of which player is hitting or which hole they are on.
Always the same noise at the same volume.

Don't get me started on that utter plank!

A very entertaining first day. Definitely lived up it's billing.
Can't see past a scheffler procession but hope I'm wrong come Sunday evening.

Why is it every time a caddy is mentioned, others get overly sensitive and confused as to why such a question has no relevance?

Are caddies simply not important?

For me it's pretty simple. He hasn't won a major in over a decade now. Ignore all his other wins as everyone says majors are the ones people look back on (IE jack Vs tiger) so that's a long time to not win a major. With his talent. He is an incredible player. He should be getting over the line. His caddies seem yes men. Rather than someone to go nope have a think again. IE pulling driver on the 18th at the us open .. a good caddy would be going put that away, 3 wood and we got this.

If he was winning majors questions wouldn't be raised.

The other thing on the 15th is how come he was so far back for his second shot? He hit first with a 4 iron, landed pin high but couldn’t hold the green. Aberg was maybe 20 yards further down, hit a similar shot but I guess the high angle of descent meant it pretty much held the green.

I missed the tee shot so did he hit 3 wood?

They never showed the tee shots.

For someone with such an unorthodox swing laid off at the top the excessive footwork he doesn’t half get that club delivered perfectly Everytime! his ball striking is machine like

It’s all so stress free round here his chip on 15 was the polar opposite to Rory

Your a caddy, so question:

McIlroy had a long wait before playing that shot, as he was waiting for 16th to clear. I don't think he talked to his caddy once, he was just on his own. Is this normal?

I felt that most other top players would be joint at the hip with their caddy, discussing options, keeping the players mind from running away from itself, etc.

To me, I reckon I could easily caddy for McIlroy without worsening his chances, because he is that good. All I would need to ensure is I am good banter off the course. Yet, if I was to caddy for any other top player, I'd be sacked after one round. Because I'm not a pro caddy and my advice would be rubbish.

Nice to get the tag but not a caddy, just done it a couple of times

My opinion for what its worth, every relationship will be different. (& as the dominant person the player will dictate much of what does/doesn’t happen)
There are times it was bleedin obvious I needed to keep my mouth shut, other times where off topic chat was the thing to do and many times where it was obvious I couldn’t add anything of value to the players shot selection/execution. Sometimes when waiting to play we just didn’t talk & other times where he’d explain his shot thoughts out loud, but he wasn’t really seeking advice or validation from me nor waiting for me to say ‘nah mate you want x club instead’ I was just a soundboard

From the highlights I saw, Rory was having a good day until that chip shot (and had been held-up/waiting to play from much earlier in the round) so things must’ve been working pretty well & no need for death by analysis either, just a chip that went a smidge too far and max punishment

anyway if I was out there then the missed shorter 2nd putt on 17th would be the one to give me the shudders ;)

How was his caddy when we was winning at Peeble or in the Players ?

A caddy relationship will be determined by the player and what they want
Post #412 - all good in tour events but he needs a caddy that can stand up in a major and either interact and keep him distracted or have the guts to give him different clubs. Tour events and majors are very obviously different beasts. He seems to have issues in the majors and the caddy does nothing to help
