Rory isn't out of it - but he needs a better round than Scheffler today. I don't think Rose will win it, so if that's the case he's 4 back from the pack, in particular Scheffler, so not great, but not curtains. The caddy doesn't hit the shots, this comes down to Rory alone. The shot from the drop zone wasn't great either. Wedges weren't great early on, then they were, then hit the buffers at 15. The 2nd double bogey compounded the mistake. Who knows, demons exorcised overnight and he comes out and hits a course record today. Or misses the cut. It's the annual torture that is McIlroy at the Masters.

Also worth noting by all the short game wizards here that on 15 his landing area to keep that on the green was so small that the margin for error was tiny.
Were talking the smallest of fractions here.
2 of the world's top 10 players put that shot in the water 3 times and many that were not caught on camera woukd have as well.

Nobody is saying we have a better short game than McIlroy.

If I played that shot McIlroy did, I would be kicking myself. But, as the same time, I could try and play conservative, and still hit it in the water by blading it. Because I am pants.

If McIlroy hits a shot that I would be disappointed with in myself, that is a really bad error. I doubt he hit it poorly. I just don't think he really gave himself any margin of error, which was absurd.

It was Rory's to lose. He was tied at the time, coming off 2 bogies .. it was a bad decision. Don't think you will find many people agreeing that it's a good decision.

Bryson was recovering better compared so his driver whilst a bad call wasn't as punishing. Rory needed a fairway finder after 2 bogies rather than another scramble

At Pinehurst Bryson hit driver on 18 and was very lucky, he was very lucky often in that final round, he sprayed his driver all over (including one that was just about on an adjacent fairway) and each and every time he had a shot to the green. He could just as easily have been sat behind or in one of those wasteland tufts.

Rory lost it on the par 3 15th (?), anything other than long would have been fine

4 wouldn't be a bad haul if it hadn't stopped 11 years ago.

That's a long gap for a player of his talents to not win one.
