The Masters 2025

I don’t think you could
He actually played a very good sensible round and looked in control of his game.

Yeah played so well like

This feels worse than when he’s all over the shop

But the Copium kicking in only 4 behind Scottie and with Rose do I trust him to keep it under par? Not sure after 17 and 18 (I hope he does would be happy to have him win)

Cantlay’s was much further back wasn’t it so understood him needing to pitch it on (not the repeat mind), whereas Rory’s just looked like a simple chip on, check and trundle. Man, how frustrating. No idea what happened on the 17th because I went to bed thinking -2 wasn’t too bad a day!

It took ages before McIlroy could hit that chip. The entire time, all I was thinking "please don't hit it too hard, please, please, please. I bet he hits it in water".

Then he hit it in water.

I guess i was nervous he'd do it after seeing what Cantlay did.

Honestly, -4 at that point, surely the No. 1 priority for that specific shot was to do anything to eliminate the water. Even if he was hugely conservative and only managed to get it to fringe, he still has a decent par chance, worst case 6. Did he thin his chip, was green quicker than he expected, did he even give it much thought?

It is just another thing on the long list occasions that McIlroy had frustrated. Played ever so well, then throws in moments like that.

Totally agree. As a top pro surely you take the big number out and trust your putting. Bad decision or bad execution? Will that linger in the mind?

The other thing on the 15th is how come he was so far back for his second shot? He hit first with a 4 iron, landed pin high but couldn’t hold the green. Aberg was maybe 20 yards further down, hit a similar shot but I guess the high angle of descent meant it pretty much held the green.

I missed the tee shot so did he hit 3 wood?

Watching the shots from yesterday on Masters website (since they have every shot) and the crowd still applauding a shot while the player’s ball is in the trees and bouncing round spectators’ feet

I think I’ve finally cracked the reason why the crowd are called patrons... its short for patronisers :p

Every player made errors round the course yesterday though. No one had a clean round.
Even Rose was in the trees a couple of times. Only diff is his errant shots didn’t cost him on the day while Rory’s errors did

People who are still backing Rory at Augusta must be suffering from some form of delusion. For anyone who has watched the brilliant Mike Bassett: England Manager, it is like when he made them repeat the mantra 'We're better than the Mexicans', only for them to go on and lose 4-0.

It’s two bad shot , the chip prob just went about 3 yards too far and then mentally another error on 17

But his game is there , nowhere near out of it but will need a good round today
I don't think it was 3 yards too far. Probably 10 yards too far, as I think most top players would plan to keep it short.

If McIlroy's attitude is to play it stiff, there are plenty of shots that this is a good plan. But not for every shot, because then you leave yourself fine margins from a disaster.

Day 4 where you absolutely need a birdie, yes go for it. Day 1 when you are in a great position, don't do anything to throw it away.

Your a caddy, so question:

McIlroy had a long wait before playing that shot, as he was waiting for 16th to clear. I don't think he talked to his caddy once, he was just on his own. Is this normal?

I felt that most other top players would be joint at the hip with their caddy, discussing options, keeping the players mind from running away from itself, etc.

To me, I reckon I could easily caddy for McIlroy without worsening his chances, because he is that good. All I would need to ensure is I am good banter off the course. Yet, if I was to caddy for any other top player, I'd be sacked after one round. Because I'm not a pro caddy and my advice would be rubbish.
