The Masters 2025

Thankfully I watched it on repeat today again so can ignore everything else

Ditto actually. Until 6pm. Should have stayed on Channel 405.

Everytime I see Rory celebrate I get goosebumps. One of those stunning moments where emotion is laid bare and he's basically just given into it. Sport can do that...

I just learned that at the Masters, if there is an odd number of golfers on the weekend, they let a member play.
That guy must be watching the cut line more than anyone else.

I always thought you have a single going out, and on other curses they seem to run to beat crime rather than a score.

Yeah, I find it odd that they do that. What's wrong with making one group a three? I don't think it'd be that much slower.

I thought I’d get emotional when he won it on Sunday but I was just grinning speechless at the tv! However, seeing some of the clips now, usually with some kind of song to pull at the heart strings, well let’s just say I’ve had to pause for a second.

Very rarely get emotional in life, manage to block bad things out of my head. But sporting achievements get me. That and dogs.

Cavendish is a lifetime achievement award. Wiggins’s got it for 1 event, maybe 2. TDF and Olympic Games in 2012.

Rory did more than either of them.

Um, you do know that Wiggins won gold medals at 4 successive Olympics, right? (Not even Chris Hoy managed that). Think about how hard it is to be at that physical peak for 4 successive Olympic cycles in a sport where aerobic fitness is almost everything. Then add the TdF to that. And multiple high calibre stage races over many years.

No idea how you judge golf vs cycling (probably a bit silly to try) but the idea that Wiggins had one decent few months is just plain wrong.

Yeah, but, in a sport nobody cares about.

Wiggins and Froome have a rather significant question mark hanging over their careers.

Saw on FB that why don't they just let a 15 handicapper play in that group then we would finally get the answer of what an average golfer would shoot lol 🤣

As I understood it, a fill-in player is used primarily to act as the Players Marker for the round and while they themselves do ‘play’ they generally wont complete holes/set a score, particularly on holes where the Pro has already holed out/AM is in the trees off the tee etc

To be fair I doubt a 15 handicapper would hole out much playing stableford there 🤣

I woke my daughter up twice when I cheered when he hit that shot into 15 and then again when he hit that shot in the play off

And yep me and the wife both got a little emotional about it , more for her when he hugged his daughter

Yeah, but, in a sport nobody cares about.

Standard silly blanket remark

So is Rory - without the marketing and branding and you tube videos

BDC is a decent guy - he also markets himself very well
it's why I have never warmed to BDC since he became a pro it has always seemed like he is trying way too hard to market himself.

First he was the scientist, doing calculations during the round, even though anyone who knows physics would tell you there are far too many variable being ignored for his calculations to actually mean anythin useful.

Then he was gigantic long driver, hulking his way around courses

Now he is a social media influencer, Mr Nice Guy.

If any of those were his actual personaility then he would have stuck with them, but because he keeps changing it feels like he is trying to find a niche in which to market himself. Plus I am sure he has hired a very expensive PR team to tell him how to behave.

Also the fact his swing is so ugly it looks like a shaved gorilla playing golf doesn help

Thats a bit of a stretch to say nobody cares about cycling, just because you dont doesnt mean nobody else does. UK Sport care enough about it to fund it with £30m for the current Olympic cycle (more than any other sport).
To be fair, they give rowing nearly £25m and that is pretty darned niche. Those figures are slightly tricksy because the more medals you win, the more money you get. Cycling has been highly efficient, has targeted brilliantly, and so they get a big chunk.

Here is the list, for those interested https://www.uksport.gov.uk/our-work/investing-in-sport/current-funding-awards
