I remember a time a player would do absolutely anything to ensure they didnt look like they were hurt, even though they may have been in agony. Good times.

Regarding a Visible Time Clock, if PL announced that it would be introduced next season, would anyone genuinely be against it? Wouldn't have thought any fans would hate it. And I'd imagine referees would like it, as they no longer have to subjectively end the game once they think an attack is over.
This is the worst thing...if time is up then surely time must be up? Why give a club extra minutes to knock the ball left, right, left seeking to work an opening....the clock is ticking....get the ball in the box.

I remember when Clive Thomas blew up at the end of a world cup match in '78 whilst a corner was in mid flight...the attacking team stuck the ball in the net but the goal was disallowed as the whistle had gone.

Wow! That’s a bit harsh. Who do you suggest instead?
Make the 4th Official do his job properly, the PGMOL need to step up and give clear direction to the Clubs exactly what will be added on for what reasons and then stick to it.

Then near the end of 90 minutes he signals how much is to be added, if the Clubs waste time in the added on time he signals again.

We want Referee’s getting decisions correct on the field, not be distracted by clock watching.

Please, watch a game of Rugby League, for Gawds sake.
The referee doesn’t watch a clock. He has nowt to do with when the game stops like you think.
The clock runs down, in accordance with the timekeeper , and when it gets to 80 mins a great big klaxon goes off.
The ref referees the match, I.e the players etc. He does not concern himself with the clock.

Does he call "time off/on" as I think they do in Union?

True story.

When I played youth football I rounded a keeper and slotted the ball into an empty net. The ref blew the whistle before the ball crossed the line 😅 Let's just say things kicked off on the touchline!

Can’t remember which match it was in the last week but the ref/4th official, whoever, added time on the time added on because of time wasting. The ref signalled it on the field, and they went almost 2 minutes over the 6 mins added.

Refs will make mistakes, some high profile and costly, but they get most decisions right in pretty much every match. If only players were crucified to the same extent…

I’ve watched Rugby League for over 40 years, including an Ashes Test Series in Australia!

You should try following a thread, my post you referenced was a reply to Hobbit about what I’d do. Others on here have suggested the Referee should decide when the clock is stopped.

Football already has a timekeeper, he’s called the 4th Official!

One other thing, the game isn’t finished when the klaxon goes off, it’s not the end of the game!

Never have I heard the simple concept of a visible clock countdown sound so complicated.

It is easy. It is basically exactly what happens now, but we all see the time left, instead of just the ref and what he can see on his wrist.

But reading this thread our Officials are useless.🤷‍♂️

They aren’t, they make mistakes like everyone else, just they get blamed for it. I just feel they are being let down by the powers that be.

Look how this thread has evolved today, it’s gone from Arsenal wasting time to Clubs needing a big clock.

Indeed, and one of the problems with only the ref being able to see time. He blows whistle as a ball is flying towards the goal, or a player is running through to shoot or put in a dangerous cross, he will be called corrupt.

Also, infuriates me when players pass the ball about in middle of park with no urgency, and ref blows whistle. If they had known there was 10 seconds left, they could at least play direct and try and score, knowing there is no worry about a counter

That's on the players, it really is. You ask the ref how long is left or gauge it from experience. The issue now is the obsession with possession, the fear of giving it away. Sometimes you have to take a risk

Except of course were a team could be ahead and seeing the clock they’ll keep possession and go backwards running down the time with the guess work taken out of it.
