Bounced around? A loan to one club, then loaned to another who signed him

That's hardly bouncing

3 solid seasons at one club out of 4 years in Germany.

He is 26 in December and played 3 seasons for a mid to lower table team in Bundasliga with the team fighting relegation for the last two seasons

Was he that highly rated ?

If so then I would have expected some bigger clubs looking and a bigger fee for someone who should be in their prime now

Wasn't that ultimately down to him? He wanted more of a payoff from Utd and when he didn't get it he dug his heels in. That was the report. He could be playing regularly if he wanted it.

Let's be honest, irrespective of his wealth, he is entitled to be paid the remaining of his contract if the new proposed wages were less as he never requested a transfer.

He cant be blamed for wanting what he is owed contractually.

EtH didnt fancy him from the outset and brought in Martinez to replace him. Yernited dont want him so pay him what he's owed and move on.

I think he believes in his own ability and would rather stay and fight for his place with them being in the CL than play for West Ham.

West Ham could have paid him £5m more if they really wanted him ??

Or HM could have sacrificed 6 months salary in return for regular football.

Correct they shouldn't but they have got to honour his contract they gave him.

No working man/woman/they/them* should sacrifice any amount of salary.

It terms of how many clubs it similar

But I’m sure it was one club before Chelsea where he won 2 titles and helped the club into the group stage of the CL , and then in Italy with teams at the top end of the table and being top scorer for them one season and the reason we he went for a club record fee at the time.

The reports suggest he has 2 years left at around £8.5 mil a year , there is an apparent extra year option but I’m guessing the club won’t take that up - now there is the FFP issue with his fee still having the some part on the figures.

Good point. Sell at a loss would affect FFP, although I doubt Utd’s world-wide merchandising will comfortably cover that.

Southgate clearly said “players in form will be picked”
by any stretch Phillips and Maguire don’t fit that.

GS is the manager ,TH obviously dosnt rate him but GS does!

Totally agree, I've mentioned this before on here. Southgate dropped a bollock with that comment.

Football is a game of opinions, if GS rates him then he can and will pick him, just because EtH doesnt rate him shouldn't stop GS from picking him.

By picking him for England, it sends a message of " i still rate you even if EtH doesnt". This keeps Maguire's confidence up and shows he's rated by Southgate. If he doesnt pick him then it sends a negative message of you're not good enough for Yernited or England and his career is potentially over.

They still have FFP issues though - their net spend since Ten Haag arrived is around £300mil , I think it’s what was stopping them from buying Amrabat out right , selling Maguire would have allowed them to get him straight away without the initial loan deal etc - also why they were trying to offload McTominay as well

A £5m payoff, maybe £2.5m from Utd and £2.5m, and he loses nothing. I can’t get my head round why a deal of some sort wasn’t put together. I get the feeling he just didn’t want to leave Utd, where he was comfortable in his pipe and slippers.

He wanted to stay and fight but was told he wasn't wanted

Moyes convinced him that we would build around him, make him captain (it's why no captain was announced)

He agreed to come on lower wages if united would cover the shortfall

If they had cut the price by 5 mil for this to smooth over I'm sure Scott mctominay would also be our player now aswell as we were considering him right until the last min.

With FFP its not as easy as you've described Bri.

Chelsea will be in the same sticky position 24/36 months time with all of there players on long massive contracts.

Isn't the £5 million the difference between what he could have earned at United if he stayed for the rest of his contract and what he would have earned at West Ham if he'd left? That's how I always assumed it worked. If he's on £150k per week at Utd but was "only" offered £100k per week at West Ham he would be losing £2.6 million per season, and with two years left on his deal that would be the £5 million he wanted. Utd would have effectively been paying him £50k per week to play for West Ham to make up for lost wages, so they would've been saving £5 million per season?
