Fair point. They've won every 1to1 battle on the pitch for sure.
Just look to have a little more pace and urgency.
Mind you, I've felt like that about every major tournament that the men have played for the last 20 years, so maybe it's just that watching a home team skews perceptions?

Well, pace yourselves. You don’t see Kipchoge running like Bolt and then complaining that his race is too long.
Play football at an intensity you can sustain a season, that’s a skill as well.
That’s not easy to do when they’ve spent the last 15 or so years training for very specific targets.

Or managers use their squads/subs better?
Don’t play as many pre season games 🤷‍♂️

What a terrible anaology. Kipchoge runs an endurance event, Bolt runs an anaerobic event. Completely different.

Sure, the players can just pace themselves, and then get battered by the opposition that run their hearts out. Great plan that.

Not necessarily. Take Spanish Tiki-Taka or the Dutch total Football where the object is to play the game using as little energy as possible. Move the ball not the players.

If these tactics are deployed well, then it's usually the team that does have to run their hearts out that get battered.

Like anything, there's a middle ground of better tactics and team management to balance the pace of play.

There are just too many games for the top clubs these days and the addition of a third tier European competition just added to that. Then add in pre-season and Internationals, it's no wonder these discussions arise.

So, a team of players still have to run their hearts out then? Very few teams have the players to pass the ball around the opposition without having to chase the ball themselves. And, even if they did, when they came to face each other, at least one team (if not both) are going to have to do a lot of running to get the ball back.

Often the teams running are the ones that have the fewest games to cope with...

What a winning from Kelly. From the Shearer school of penalty-taking.

A red card for a stamp and a penalty exit would have felt horribly familiar... fair play to them!
