I was surprised how poor/negative Martinelli was, I remember him as being quick and skilful and always running at the opposition. Every time he got the ball today he passed backwards.

I suppose it’s the way modern football is played but very few players now seem to take their man on.

For me it makes the game less exciting and must be a lot easier to defend against

I’m glad they didn’t play Eze instead

I’m confused why Arsenal signed Gyokeres! They create nothing for him at all, chance of a ball into the box pass it back to the halfway line. Martinelli is a headless chicken and has no final ball!

Madueke looked decent was causing issues so they stopped passing to him to go backward instead. Genuinely don’t know what they were trying to achieve other than hope for 0-0!

My thoughts exactly.

United desperately need a keeper with a big personality, and if this signing happens, there aren’t many out there who fit the bill more.

All keepers have mistakes in them. But what we have lacked for too long is one who isn’t afraid to shout and bawl at those in front of him. Onana and Bayindir are shrinking violets in that respect - neither command either their own eighteen yard box or the defence in front of them.

I’m still not convinced it’s going to happen but, if it does, it has the potential to be just what United are looking for in a big problem position.

We had him at Reading on loan in 2019 and he was immense. One of the best keepers I've seen. It was that 6 month loan spell that established him and he went to Villa that summer.

Proper leader and might make the odd mistake, the difference is he will make saves he has no right to make.

No consistency in reffing this year .
Fulham have a goal disallowed because someone trod on a foot making a tackle ,today against city a Brighton player in the city box gets his foot trodden on and play is waved on 🤬
He wasn’t making a tackle though.!
He was doing an amazing bit of skill and the Chelsea player backed out of the challenge and was stood on accidentally.
That’s why it was such a bad decision.

Thought he was class for us during that period. He’s an absolute 💩house but makes him better for it!

He will command that back line and they need it!

Seems Emi Martinez may have agreed terms with United and has been left out of the Villa squad this evening.

I won’t lie. I think the fella is a prize tool. But he’s a massive upgrade on what we have. And let’s face it. As my lad has just said, if Bruno played for anyone else he’d despise him, so maybe Martinez could be cut some slack if he pulled on a United shirt.

I know the talk remains of Lammens but I’m sure I’m not the only United fan who would be a little concerned to see a young keeper thrown into that team. What we need is someone with experience and a big personality.

Lammens may be one for the future. We need a keeper for the present.
I've said it from day one we should have kept de Gea. Yes he was very highly paid but for a reason. It's said he wasn't good with his feet but is Onana? His speciality is the hospital ball

The whole good with the feet thing needs to die a death! So many good keepers get overlooked because someone else is better with their feet.

You can’t tell me Donnaruma, De Gea or Martinez wouldn’t improve so many teams and win so many points but they can’t be signed because Pete down the road is better with his feet. Crap keeper but he can pass it well 😂

The irony is, even though Onana is allegedly better with his feet, we rarely now play out from the back, seemingly having a preference for him playing it long.

So, having gone full circle we got rid of a keeper who was allegedly poor with his feet, and the result is one who still goes long but is nowhere near the shot stopping presence of his predecessor, and who is nowhere near as commanding.

As I always do when players come in, I’m willing to allow them time to settle so I can judge with my own eyes. Onana has had more that long enough to win me over and, despite brief periods during which he has been okay, his mistakes, and they are many and varied, massively outweigh any good he does.

Same with defenders as well.

So many defenders in the PL that can’t defend properly.

If I heard him correctly the ref explained the decision by stating the Fulham player was guilty of a "reckless challenge".

But how could he have been making a a challenge when he was in control of the ball. The only challenge being made was by the Chelsea player and he mistimed that by not getting to the ball

It does make me wonder if some of the match officials, including VAR, have ever played football.

Think it was a Careless challenge ! Not that it makes a difference 😂

Call me old fashioned, but a keeper’s first responsibility is to keep clean sheets. Lay everything on the line, be willing to take a bit of a battering at times, but do everything you can, however you can, not to concede goals. Schmeichel was the absolute master at it.

I know the game has moved on, but you cannot sacrifice virtually all of those basic qualities just so you can have a sweeper playing behind your central defenders.

Completely agree with you and I think football is worse for it most keepers now are dull and don’t risk anything

It’s very rare that there are GK’s that are comfortable with the ball at their feet as well as being outstanding as a shot stopper

Thankfully we have Allison who is that good , his replacement though is outstanding as a shot stopper but not as good with his feet

Not a good match at Anfield both teams looked like they didn’t want to win .
Far to many mistakes from both .

Goal of the season contender though ?
Sob was fantastic today mom by a mile.

Bit worried about Macallister he looks miles off atm.

Not the greatest start performance wise but to take 9 points is impressive. Two very tough games in there too and Bournemouth will get lots of results away with their pace on the break.

Ironically, I think they risk too much. Even Raya put Arsenal under a lot of pressure today by trying to play a stupid short ball. They risk too much. Especially the ones who play for weaker sides, but are told to play like prime Barcelona
