Amorim had the players at Sporting to play his limited system. At Utd he don’t. I don’t blame Amorim for that but surely whoever choose Amorim must of realised that. Did Amorim realise that ? The thing is that it has gone on and on with far to many managers.

Which is, I suspect, precisely why Amorim didn’t want to make the move part way through a season. He’s not stupid. He knows that United squad doesn’t have the players who suit his system. And I have no doubt the United hierarchy know it as well.

It’s been said here many times now, but when ten Hag was sacked and Amorim brought in, United’s season was over at that moment. And Amorim was given a free hit for the rest of the season.

I expect wholesale changes in the summer. There will be a number of players shown the door. That process has started with Antony and Rashford going out on loan, with an expectation no doubt that they don’t return. Eriksen I believe is out of contract, and I’ll be staggered if Casemiro is still there next season. Throw into the mix the likes of Lindelöf and one or two others and that frees up the space, and a considerable amount of money, to bring players in more suited to the style Amorim wants to play.

I have a feeling that one of Garnacho and Mainoo will also move on. The latter seems to have stalled somewhat after a stellar first season, where he perhaps made too much progress too soon. I suspect there was never a plan for him to play virtually every minute, or at least there shouldn’t have been given his age. But he had responsibility foisted onto him way too soon and it seems to have undermined the progress he had made. As for Garnacho, my patience is rapidly diminishing. He is every bit as frustrating in a red shirt as Rashford had become, and is making the same mistakes. I still question whether there is a place for him in a 3-4-3 - he is an out and out winger, and unless his game can adapt and he can be effective playing narrower occasionally I’m not sure he’s a good fit. So, of the two, I think he is most at risk but the departure of either will free up a big chunk of cash to reinvest.

As for the performance last night, there are clear signs that United can become a far better possession based team than they have been for some time. We look far more comfortable playing through a press than we have done in months so there are clear signs of progress.

So, I’m not worried. I have no reason to be because it seems quite clear to all those who actually support the club, rather than constantly seeking reasons to take a swipe, that there is a plan. And that plan did not include any sort of realistic expectation that the manager would turn a corner with a squad he inherited, rather than having built it himself. The time I will worry is if Amorim has to start next season with largely the same squad which finishes this one.

There is no doubt that Amorin will get the chance in the summer to bring in the players he wants and it’s always a free hit when someone comes in halfway - the change should have been made the summer before and then the money spent on the players that manager wants but they kept with ETH for many reasons ( none were actually wanting to keep him )

But there are two things that would worry any Man Utd fan

Amorin has a style and a way of playing that worked in Portugal - is that a way that will work in the Prem , does he have any other way of playing, when you do make a change mid season you are looking for some improvements - is Amorin flexible enough to adjust the tactics to suit the players he has , next season he won’t get a whole load of players because united are going to struggle to spend and attract.

And secondly- Ineos , the club has gone backwards since they arrived , the track record of being involved in football clubs is poor , the glazers and Woodward etc were shocking , INEOS don’t appear to be doing much better and some of the decisions have been baffling and have made the club keep moving backwards

It’s going to be a massive season next year and a huge summer - bid crossroads for the club , there has to be steps forwards because it’s a long way back

But the whole point is that most United fans I know couldn’t care less if this is statistically the worst season we’ve ever had. I’m genuinely not bothered in the slightest.

The only ones who seem even remotely interested all support other teams, but obsess about mine.
I'm far from obsessed. Annoyed you mugged two league wins off my mob but other than that I've a passing interest as I findit sad to see a side taking on all of Europe not so many years back now falling back to the side that isn't far better than the 73/74 side that went down. Football has changed of course but it'll be a long time before United are a team competing in the PL. How much money is needed and how many windows/managers it takes is another question altogether

But will he get the time in the role. He should as I rate him as a manager and this seems an ideal match in the long term but getting a side sorted by offloading and buying in one window is a big ask. We know how prices then jump in the January window
I certainly hope so and I hope Potter has patience working with our owner.

I’d say Man Utd’s season is just a long pre season now.
Manager will decide who he wasn’t to keep & who he wants to bring in.
Next season is when the manager will be judged.
Should be looking at top 6 next season imo.

This situations are not the same at all, but Nuno kept us up last season but we were still struggling and inconsistent after he was appointed.

Given a pre-season and a few key summer signings and now we're basically the greatest counter attacking team in the history of football ;)

Got to give him a pre-season to install his tactics properly and you'd hope they'd strengthen over the summer (well, United fans would hope, I don't care personally 😆 ) before properly judging him.

I support Forest and always want us to beat you, but will always want Utd and Liverpool to be competitive.
As a supporter of Utd you may not see how some of us view it, but you and Liverpool have been the very definition of English football for most of my adult life and many (not all) of us take no pleasure from seeing you struggle this badly.

I'd equate it to how I feel about the West Indies cricket team. The way they played in the 80s defined cricket for me and the sport misses something special when they're crap.

Can't get on board with this at all. I've dealt with smug glory supporting weapons all my football-supporting life....United's struggles particularly are an absolute joy to watch.

In the grand scheme, they are similar.

Emery did the same at Villa, 17th to 7th to 4th.. with the vast majority of the same squad.

Recruitment department is to blame for a lot of their current mess too - which is down to Glazers historically.

Pre-seasons for tactics is a load of garbage, players know the system by now, just cant play to it.

And those weapons make being a lifelong, thick or thin supporter very difficult, because we all get judged exactly the same.

That’s bold call

Through the 90’s and 00’s United where the dominate team and they gained a lot of support and part of the sport was lording it over rivals

I grew up watching them be pretty rubbish , then had to watch us be pretty rubbish

And now they are taking it to depths not seen before and its part of that cycle - irs prob highlighted more with social media etc

They get highlighted for being poor because they are a massive club people will talk about them , it’s prob not easy for them

In the unlikely event that we were to win another title, I'd much rather it was by bettering a top quality big 6 than getting lucky in a year when half of them are in the doldrums.

What if "the big 6" is changing altogether though? I think there's already a case that Spurs aren't in that group anymore or are at least the one club gradually slipping away at present - no UCL since 2022. United will hold their status for longer due to global fanbase but Spurs don't have the same appeal as United.

I think Newcastle can make a strong case for breaking into that group in the next few years, Villa have a chance too, as do Forest if this momentum continues.

Also winning a title over 38 gameweeks will never be lucky IMO

I was thinking of Leicester at number 6, not Spurs. Minimum criterion has to be that you've won something in living memory. 😉😆
