I'm not dismissive of what Southgate did to be fair but ultimately he didn't win anything. He did improve the lot of the national team quite considerably though, more than any other manager in my lifetime.

To emphasise what is wrong with these honours list. Where’s is Kevin Sinfields name. He has not even got a bag of chips. Scandalous.

It's not about winning though really, otherwise Beckham would have one by now. It's providing the service. Jenson button is another one , won a world title when we hadn't had one for a while.

It’s a joke of a Knighthood and there is no justification for it beyond jumping on a popular bandwagon

It makes a mockery of the system

There are thousands out there that have earned their honour and rightly so - every now and then someone gets a token honour that devalues the system

Kevin Sinfield should be on that list, absolutely no doubt about that.
That challenges he completed for Rob Burrows and bringing Motor Neurone Disease to the forefront of people's minds are astonishing.

I'm not sure we can take what he has won as a player domestically into account, maybe if he had a Euro's or World Cup in there as well, lots of players have won plenty but don't get recognised.
Thats not take away from his Charity work, which should be recognised.

He has both an MBE and an OBE, does he deserve a Knighthood when the other 2 already recognise his Charity work? Possibly yes, but you very rarely see people getting higher honours for the same thing when already recognised.

Southgate’s is for Services to Association Football, you can’t compare him to Sinfield, it’s like comparing Apples with Oranges.

Bobby Robson was knighted for reaching the semi-finals, so it was probably on the cards Southgate would be recognised.

The whole system needs an overhaul or binning, but you still can’t blame those awarded the Honours.

That interview is 10 years after he was knighted!! He was still managing in 2002, didn’t retire until 2004, and he’s discussing the calls for Beckham to be Knighted.
How come he didn’t turn down his Knighthood if that’s how he felt.

By that stage Bobby Robson had been a manager for over 30 years

Won multiple domestic leagues around Europe , won multiple European trophies and won domestic trophies

He was rewarded for a stellar career

Southgate has won nothing as a manager

He had been given a knighthood to try and be modern - it’s a complete joke and I normally support the honour system

It was bad enough when they were rumoured to be giving one to Beckham who also doesn’t deserve one

It’s laughable and a mockery of the whole thing

He should have done the decent thing and turned it down
