Its just a very backwards move.

You're Man United not Crystal Palace...

Id be after a proper top CB as a third option if I supported United.
Indeed, but Utd are not buying Evans to be a 1st choice centre back. It appears he will be a short term back up. Maybe even a back up of a back up of a back up.

Bad business would be buying a player who may well not play. Any decent player may well not be interested as they won't play. It also doesn't matter if it is Man Utd, as it appears Utd are currently on tight margins due to FPP. If they spend any more money, it needs to be done wisely. On a striker (hopefully). Spending 5, 10, 20, million on a defender just eats into any budget they have left.

Also, it may not be far of the truth that it is another sign Utd are looking to offload Maguire, but it is still uncertain, so they are looking for a player to bridge the gap.

Again though, the FFP issues are due to poor management at the top of United and nowhere else. Now you find yourself in the situation of signing a 36 year old former player instead of competing for a young talent.

You do need to offload Maguire and plenty of others while you're at it! But plenty wont be able to pay the wages they're on and you'll be stuck with them till they go on a free.

Tbf - I could go on about this all day, 375k a week for a player who has never bagged 20+ league goals is also a madness but that's United in a nutshell. :ROFLMAO:

By sounds of what I read, they were initially letting him train without a contract. He impressed them, so he signed a short term contract.

If that is the case, what is the problem? The future of Maguire is uncertain. United have their first choice pairing, with Lindelof as back up. They possibly see Evans as a very good short term back up, before they go out and buy someone or get an academy player up to speed.

Get Evans on the cheap. Use him as back up and put him in with the youngsters every week to bring them on. Win-win.

Yes, but we all know Utd have been poor in transfer market for a long time. But, that doesn't mean that every single bit of business they do is shocking business. So, specifically related to Evans, I don't think it is poor.

It looks like an obvious and easy piece of business to do.

If Utd do end up selling Maguire and end of window, and then Utd get a couple of injuries at the back, they could well be accused of poor planning. However, if they had Evans to jump in, playing well with a bit of experience, and he plays well for a few weeks, then it could be a fantastic bit of business.

And it isn't really fair to say "it isn't the sort of thing a club like Man Utd should be doing". Man Utd were pretty strong in 2001, and signed 35 year old Laurent Blanc. Sometimes big clubs, even when they are near their peak, sign older players.

I'm a big fan of what Evans has done and UTD could have saved millions of they'd kept home all of those years ago, BUT, have you just compared a World Cup/Euro double winning (Captain I believe) to a related CB?

Nope. But I'm still comparing Utd signing 2 35 year old players. Just because he won the World Cup, he wasn't exactly in his prime. It was a short term solution.

Utd have bought older players for short term solutions before. In Evans case, it is more of a non-issue as he is being signed as a back up player. It would be a bigger talking point if thet were buying him to play in 1st 11

Hugely disappointed in Henderson , thought a lot more of him and leaves with a bit of sour taste

Players will always chase the money and it’s very poor to see players still in their prime like Neves , Mahrez and Fabinho

But Henderson I thought have higher morals than others especially with his work during Covid and been very vocal supporting LGBQT

He was club captain and his legacy is a bit tainted now 😢

Virtue signalling, unfortunately he's not alone in that.

Not all players chase money and some put loyalty and family and morals ahead of the cash...not many for sure. Not at all surprised at Mahrez doing so but more so Henderson especially with his support for LGBQT+. I can only surmise said support was just to look the good guy when in fact he really doesn't give a stuff. Henderson is stated as worth £23 million...greed overcoming any other desire.

Sorry Phil but that just shows how deluded Liverpool fans are.
You actually think the club & players have morals.
So that’s 3 Liverpool Legends that have gone chasing the dirty Saudi money 🤷‍♂️

He is 32 so I wouldn't quite put him in his prime. I'd say he could have had another year at city, 2-3 at another PL or top European club but he has just topped over from prime territory imo.
If he wants to play every week though he needs to leave City.
so it might be for the footy not the money, I respect that.
But sure another PL team would have him.

Like a shot. He is a quality player.

It seems to be that the Saudis are offering 2-3 times the salary they would normally expect, perhaps more. Hard to compete with that.
